Out of the box, the Sony Xperia Z comes pre-installed with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. However, it is now officially upgradable to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, according to GSM Arena.

But more adventurous smartphone users can opt to use a custom firmware to update their Xperia Z with the latest version of the Android Lollipop. With the availability of the PureX firmware, Xperia Z owners can easily experience the goodies available in the Lollipop OS.

Team Android noted that the PureX custom ROM based on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop offers great features such as advanced power menu and options for call recording. Moreover, Xperia Z users will also find Sony-exclusive features such as Clear Phase, Clear Stereo and XLoud in the custom ROM.

Because PureX ROM is based on stock official firmware, those who will decide to install this firmware can expect a stable, smooth and speedy performance. But it should be noted that installing a custom ROM on the Xperia Z voids any warranty available for the smartphone.

Also, to avoid installation issues later on, there are requirements to meet first before proceeding to install the PureX ROM. One of essential ones is to create a proper backup for all the data and settings stored on the Xperia Z.

Xperia Z users should be aware that using a custom firmware will most likely wipe out all the contents of the smartphone. And to avoid losing the important files, experts recommend the use of ClockWorkMOd and the TWRP recovery tools to back up the device.
