US Air Force's Tec Torch Burns Through Metal Bars, Fences [Watch]
In response to a request by the U.S. Airforce Special Operations Forces for a handheld tool that would help soldiers get through barriers like metal bars and locks, a Texas-based company developed a handheld device called the Tec Torch.
Energetic Materials & Products, Inc. (EMPI) developed a lightweight, handheld Tec Torch, which can easily burn through metal barriers in just two seconds.
The Tec Torch looks like a simple plastic stick, but inside, there is a powerful igniter that heats up a powerful flame to over 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
The device has been safety tested to ensure that operators remain safe while using it. Tests prompted the manufacturer to work for thousands of hours on alterations to the Tec Torch's cartridge to perfect the design.
Designed to work fast, the Tec Torch burns for just two seconds and cuts through a variety of obstacles.
The Torch will cut through steel rods up to 0.75 inches with its Rod Cutter cartridge. With the Plate Penetrator cartridge, the device can punch a hole 0.35 inches in diameter through a 0.5 inch steel plate. Users can exchange cartridges quickly and easily, depending on the obstacle that operators need to surpass.
The Tec Torch can help first responders gain access to locked buildings or overcome metal barriers.
Tactical operations, like those carried out by the military, can benefit from the Tec Torch as well. Tactical teams can gain entry to secured areas quickly using the device. The Tec Torch will even work when fully submerged underwater if needed.
The Tec Torch provides a solution to law enforcement, military, first responders and others, who face difficult metal obstacles every day.
