The success of the first season of True Detective made HBO decide to come back with a second season. However, this time, there will be no more Matthew McConaughey. The award-winning character actor will not be a part of the show along with his co-star Woody Harrelson, who is most likely not to return either.

The creator of the show, Nic Pizzolatto, told reporters that the second season would be more exciting with a storyline that changes each episode just like American Horror Story. The next season will be more subtle and dramatic, but still action-filled and mysterious. The next season will most likely have two directors, but the details are still being finalized. Season 1 director Cary Fukunaga talked about the time he spent directing the show, including the casting, location scouting and preparation for future episodes. He said that it was totally exhausting, but worth it. However, he said that having two directors doing the job would be great. There was also a tweet that there could be a female lead character for season 2, but no final details have been announced yet.

In regards to the replacement for McConaughey, Brad Pitt's name tops the list. For someone who has played detective roles in the past, Pitt is expected to do a great job. However, until now, there is no final confirmation yet from the creators.

For the next season, it is expected that the approach will remain naturalistic. There must be room for silences and vastness while putting emphasis on culture and landscape. The characters are also expected to deliver their lines with more authenticity and resonance. In regards to the final release dates, HBO is still mum about it. However, once everything has been ironed out, they might start releasing more details.
