PlayStation 4 Features: Backwards Compatibility for PS2 Games Might Work on PS4
PlayStation 4 (PS4) might be able to play old games just like the Xbox One.
Sony has not made any announcements but a video game website may have made the discovery on their own.
The PS4 console might already have the capabilities to play old PlayStation 2 (PS2) games, TechRadar reports. This could mean that the PS4 has expanded the amount of games it offers by 1,850.
Eurogamer received the Special Edition Star Wars Battlefront PS4 bundle. In this bundle, there are four downloadable Star Wars games including Super Star Wars, Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter, Star Wars: Racer Revenge and Star Wars: Bounty Hunter.
When the team of testers at Eurogamer started playing the three PS2 Star Wars games they noticed the old PS2 logo on the screen when the games would boot up. The testers also noted that there was a method to emulate the PS2 memory card to allow players to save their games as they played. There was also a prompt on the screen that told players the start and select buttons can be used on the new PS4 controller by pressing on the left and right of the DualShock 4's trackpad.
These three things were strange to the testers at Eurogamer. If these game re-makes were ports of the original games, the memory card emulation and the start and select prompts would not be needed because the games would work naturally with the new controller and system. The team believes that these are the first three games that are backwards compatible on the PS4.
The possible PS2 emulator on the PS4 actually improved the resolutions of these games from the old PS2 resolution of 512 x 448 and 640 x 448 to the new PS4 resolution of 1292 x 896.
Sony has expressed desire to bring its old titles to the PS4, but has not been discussing how it plans to do so.
If PS2 games start working on the PS4 it would mean four times as many games would be available on the PS4 than there are today.
