Samsung Gear VR Specs: Virtual Reality Device Powered by Oculus Now Available in Stores for $99
Samsung has made its Oculus-powered virtual reality device the Gear VR available to stores starting Friday.
The $99 device needs to be paired with a compatible Samsung smartphone.
After two "Innovator's Edition" Gear VR headsets, the final consumer edition is now available to the public, TechRadar reports.
Starting Friday, customers will be able to pick up a Gear VR headset from Amazon, Best Buy and AT&T. T-Mobile will start offering the Gear VR next week. At select Best Buy and AT&T stores, customers can demo the headsets. International pre-orders are now open for non-U.S. customers.
The Gear VR will need to be paired with a Samsung Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge or Galaxy S6 Edge+.
The Gear VR went through testing before it was made ready for the public. The two innovator's edition headsets were tested by developers and improvements were made with each one before the consumer edition was released.
The Gear VR will allow for viewers to watch Netflix or play games and plenty of other virtual reality experiences.
"More than 25 brand new made-for-VR games and experiences are coming to Gear VR by early December, joining the more than 100 games and apps at launch," Oculus says about the Gear VR.
Gear VR users will now be able to play EVE: Gunjack, Land's End and fight mutants with Mortal Bltz VR. Next week users will be able to explore the aquatic safari park in Ocean Rift and play Finding Monsters.
The Gear VR will also allow users to chat with their friends in a virtual reality setting. They can watch YouTube videos or Twitch streams while chatting with the Oculus Connect feature. This means that the virtual reality experience will be made for more than just one person at a time.
The Oculus App Store will load when the device is plugged in. This is where more apps and content can be downloaded. There should be even more apps coming in the next few months.
At just $99, this is likely the cheapest way to experience virtual reality.
