Boston Red Sox Trade Rumors: BoSox Eyeing Miami Marlins' Jose Fernandez?
The Miami Marlins' offseason got interesting since last week when the news that they are willing to trade prized young pitcher Jose Fernandez. According to a report by NBC Sports, the recent feud between the Marlins front office and his agent Scott Boras is one of the likely factors whether Miami part ways with Fernandez.
The tension between the team and the agent started over the workload of the 23-year-old pitcher during the season and the treatment of teammate and another Boras client, outfielder Marcell Ozuna. Marlins president David Samson said that Boras will not be a part of the discussions involving innings limit on Fernandez.
"He will not be involved in any discussion as it relates to Jose Fernandez. We will be in touch with the doctors and Jose as we formulate a plan," Samson said via Associated Press. However, Fernandez told ESPN that his agent will be included in future talks with the Marlins front office.
"I do not know what all this is all about, but Scott Boras will be there because he's my agent. I get to decide who is going to be on my phone calls. It's that simple," Fernandez said. The 2013 NL Rookie of the Year rejected an extension with Miami at the start of the 2015 season.
Fernandez missed most the 2014 and 2015 seasons due to recovery from Tommy John surgery but has a career record of 22-9 with a solid 2.40 ERA, a 1.01 WHIP and 336 strikeouts in 289 innings pitched over three seasons, per Baseball-Reference. He is also arbitration eligible this offseason and is under club control until 2019.
One team interested and in need of starting pitching is the Boston Red Sox. According to Mass Live, the Red Sox will be players in free agency for big name pitchers like Johnny Cueto, Zack Greinke, David Price and Jordan Zimmermann. If the team can't sign those players, they could also sign other mid-rotation starters like Wei-Yin Chen, Yovani Gallardo and Jeff Samardzija.
The report also mentioned that Boston will target young pitchers via trade if they can't sign anyone on their free agent list. Sonny Gray of the Oakland Athletics, Matt Harvey of the New York Mets, and Chris Sale of the Chicago White Sox are three presumed available aces in the market.
However, David Schoenfield of ESPN noted that the Red Sox have a lot of prospects that could lure the Cuban out of Miami. He suggested Boston sending infielders Yoan Moncada and Rafael Devers along with pitchers Brian Johnson or Henry Owens to the Marlins for the Fernandez.
