Backwards Compatibility for Original Xbox Games? Exec Mike Ybarra Talks About the Challenge
Xbox took a step forward by looking back to previous-generation platform Xbox 360. The question is, how far back are they willing to go to offer the most complete console experience to their players? In a recent interview on "The Inner Circle" podcast, Mike Ybarra answers the nagging questions about original Xbox games eventually making their way to the forefront.
According to a report from GameSpot, Xbox engineering boss Mike Ybarra went on to reveal more about the plans for the backwards compatibility technology teasing, "Nothing's impossible."
He explained that the current goal of the team is adding the collection of Xbox 360 titles available on backwards compatibility saying, "Right now we are very focused on trying to get as many of the games as we can for Xbox 360 games on Xbox One and we launched a hundred and four, we're going to release regular sets of games at a high frequency."
"We're not looking at original Xbox games on Xbox One yet," he continued. "Right now the focus is making more 360 games work. [It would be] certainly very challenging. Getting Xbox 360 games to work was incredibly challenging and really a multi-year engineering investment. Going all the way back to the original certainly would challenge the team."
As the team seems to be preoccupied with getting the current backwards compatibility feature running smoothly and with as much games as possible, it might be a while before original Xbox games become playable on the latest console. However, don't discount the possibility as while Ybarra was non-committal, he also mentioned that the Xbox team is not one to back down from a good challenge.
"But we're fortunate enough to have a great engineering team who loves to take on challenges," Ybarra points out. "I'm sure they would love that one as an opportunity to go look at."
As mentioned by Ybarra in the interview, Xbox head Phil Spencer is one person who is interested to see the original Xbox games make their way to the Xbox One. In an exchange with a fan on Twitter last August, the executive admitted that he raised the same inquiry to the team in multiple occasions.
"I ask the BC [backwards compatibility] team this question a lot," Spencer wrote on his Twitter account in response to a fan asking about original Xbox titles on the new platform. "Need to finish 360 BC for now."
