Thanksgiving Day 2015: Retailers Open or Closed for Thanksgiving?
Thanksgiving Day is just right around the corner and reports say that there will be at least 38 million shoppers to grace malls and other retail outlets. Find out which will be opened or closed, including malls, which are apparently requiring retail stores to stay open on the eve of Thanksgiving.
There have been numerous announcements from retailers like H&M and Nordstrom saying that they choose to close their business on the highly anticipated holiday to give employees a chance to enjoy Thanksgiving with their loved ones.
However, it seems like most of the anchor chains like J.C. Penny Co. and Macy's will remain open and are even encouraging mall owners to convince small retailers to remain open on Thanksgiving Day, starting the night before until 12 midnight, CNBC reports.
According to the Wall Street Journal, J.C. Penny Co. will be starting its business hours at 3 p.m. on Thursday while Macy's will open at 6 p.m. And with that, several mall owners and landlords are already requiring their tenants to be open as well without any choice.
It is "imperative for retailers and restaurants to be open" on Thanksgiving according to Anjee Solanki, the national director of retail services for Colliers International Group Inc., a real estate services firm, as quoted by the Wall Street Journal.
"This is when they can capture as much foot [traffic] as possible and drive future business with specials for the following month. Every tenant must adhere to the hours for uniformity," Solanki adds. Furthermore, "Merchants are required to open at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 26th, (Thanksgiving Day) until closing at midnight," said one letter from the Sunvalley Shopping Center in Concord, California. "All merchants have the option of remaining open midnight through 5:00 a.m. if they choose."
The publication reports that the holiday will indeed attract thousands of people to shop, which is all the more reason why retailers are opening. The Wall Street Journal reports that out of 1,000 people surveyed by the International Council of Shopping Centers, about 12 percent of U.S. consumers plan to visit a store on Thanksgiving Day, and the total number of people will rise to up to 38 million if the survey is deemed accurate.
However, there are still a few stores who choose not to open including Babies R Us, Barnes and Noble, Bed Bath and Beyond, Burlington Coat Factory, Costco, Cost Plus World Market, Dillard's, DSW, GameStop, Guitar Center, Hobby Lobby, The Home Depot, Home Goods, Lowe's, JoAnn Fabric, Marshalls, Maurices, Petco, PetSmart, Pier I Imports, Ross Dress for Less, Sam's Club, Staples, TJ Maxx and True Value, per Nola.
