Xbox One Backwards Compatibility: Original Xbox Games Could Still Become Playable on Latest-Gen Console
Microsoft says there's still hope for original Xbox games to be backwards-compatible with the Xbox One.
In the latest episode of The Inner Circle Podcast, Xbox program management director Mike Ybarra was asked if original Xbox games can eventually be played on the Xbox One. The executive responded by saying that it is possible, but the concept is not atop the company's current priorities.
"We're not looking at original Xbox games on Xbox One yet. Right now the focus is making more Xbox 360 games work," Ybarra explained. "[It would be] certainly very challenging. Getting Xbox 360 games to work was incredibly challenging and really a multi-year engineering investment. Going all the way back to the original certainly would challenge the team."
Since developers are still enamored with last-gen titles, it's safe to assume that Xbox One support for original Xbox games won't be arriving in the near future. One thing to be optimistic about is that Ybarra said the engineering team responsible for backwards compatibility likes undertaking tough problems. Speaking about the matter, he said, "I'm sure they would love that one as an opportunity to go look at".
Another matter Ybarra talked about during the interview is the addition of background music functionality to Microsoft's current-gen console. Better support for background music is among the backlog of upcoming capabilities for the Xbox One. However, its release date is still unclear since the company wants to take its time in perfecting the feature.
"Background music is on that list. Windows 10 will help us as we think about what's the right away to deliver that. And we want to do it in a way that surprises fans," said Ybarra.
With the arrival of the New Xbox One Experience patch a few weeks ago, Windows 10 has become the chief operating system of the Xbox One. The update, which you can read more about here, improves graphics and performance while also modifying the console to be more receptive of future upgrades.
In the meantime, gamers on Xbox One can listen to music while playing their favorite titles through the Xbox Music app and Snap. However, this arrangement takes up a significant portion of the screen. The inconvenience has caused more than 21,000 people to vote for "Play Music From Apps Without Snap" on the Xbox User Voice.
Ybarra also shared his thoughts on the poor reception of the rewards system for achievement challenges. He was aware that usage was "pretty low" for time-based challenges. He said that this might be due to the fact that challenges were hard to find, something Microsoft is currently trying to fix.
