When Warner Bros. announced that Ben Affleck was signed on to play Batman and go head to head with Superman in the Man of Steel sequel, the Internet exploded.

In the seven months that have followed the announcement, Gal Gadot was cast to play Wonder Woman and Jesse Eisenberg was cast to play the film's antagonist Lex Luthor.

Although many still have their doubts at the casting list for the upcoming film tentatively titled Batman vs. Superman, it's hard to imagine what comic book geeks and fanboys would have thought if Josh Brolin had been cast to play the Caped Crusader instead of Affleck.

In a recent interview with Total Film, Brolin said he had discussed the possibility of playing the role with the film's director Zack Snyder. He said that the two just had different ideas of how the role should be played.

"Me and Zack had a conversation about it," Brolin said, adding, "and there were several reasons why we said it wasn't the best idea on both sides. I had mine and Zack had his."

Brolin, who is starring in the graphic novel adaptation Sin City: A Dame to Kill For later this year, told the magazine that he doesn't regret his decision to pass up the role.

"To me it's not about being cool and all that stuff," he said. "Looking back over your shoulder and saying that one line everyone's going to remember? Maybe I could do that. But I do roles that aren't necessarily all that cool. All my stuff is a little off."

Despite passing up the role, he said he was not a fan of the way Affleck received the barrage of angry Internet responders over the news of his casting. He said that's something his wife and children have to read and that's not a good thing.

"People were so disrespectful," Brolin lamented. "How can you blame an actor for acting? I understand you're a fan, but people forget that actors are human."

Although Brolin doesn't regret his decision, he is passing up a franchise role as Warner Bros. Chief Executive Officer Kevin Tsujihara told the New York Times he would be announcing a DC Comics film series in the near future.

The Man of Steel sequel, which is set for May 6, 2016 release date, is expected to launch a comic book movie franchise for the studio and a long-awaited Justice League film, similar to Marvel's Avengers.

The highly anticipated sequel will already include three key members of the Justice League as Henry Cavil will reprise his role as the title character along with Affleck and Gadot rounding out DC's Holy Trinity, while Eisenberg is joined by returning cast Amy Adams, Diane Lane and Laurence Fishburne.
