Season 6 of "The Walking Dead" has been a whirlwind of action, blood, guts, terror and heartache. It is safe to say that this season has started out with more zombies and gore than any other to date. But when fans thought Glenn had died and the producers left his fate hanging in the wind for several episodes, the show became a transcendent, must-watch series.

Executive Producer Greg Nicotero sat down with TV Guide and gave them some answers about why they decided to toy with fans emotions like they did, only to bring Glenn back in the end.

First of all, fans of this powerhouse show are some of the most dedicated and clingy in the world, at least at this time. When it appeared that Glenn had been ripped apart by Walkers, many noticed right away how the situation could have been redeemed.

As it turned out, many of the fan theories about him crawling under the dumpster were true. But they waited several episodes to show that to fans, making the wait all that more emotional. But did the producers of the series play with fans emotions?

"I don't feel that it was playing with people's emotions," Nicotero told TV Guide. "When these people leave Alexandria and go on a run, they never know if they're going to see them again or not. The story that we really told was that Daryl, Sasha, Abraham, Glenn and Nicholas -- none of them have returned."

That is of course true, but they designed the separate stories episodically and left fans to wonder whether or not he really was torn apart. They made fans wait through several episodes before they went back to the incident and showed how it played out.

"The fact that people had such an outpouring of emotion and people literally begged for Glenn not to be dead, that just shows how invested people are in Steven's [Yeun] performance and his character," Nicotero said.

Warning: A spoiler is coming.

There is still a whole other half of the season to go and the character Negan is about to make his TV debut on the series. For those who have not read the comic books, Negan is the character who actually kills Glenn and maims Carl. So who knows how that is going to play out on the show. There have been several instances where the show has deviated from the comic series. If it had stayed perfectly synced with the comic, then Carol would have been dead a long time ago.
