The Sundance Film Festival will well-known not only for showcasing the best of independent film, but also as a showcase for diverse cinema. Latin America cinema has had solid exposure at the festival over the last few years and looks poised to continue to get the same level of notice at this year's showcase.
That said, it is interesting to take a look at years past and see which Latino films benefitted from earning a spot in Park City.
With 77 countries having submitted for consideration in Foreign Film Category at the 2015 Academy Awards, the Academy will now have to look through all the films and narrow it down to nine before announcing the five final Oscar nominees. Which Latin American contenders will actually get nominated?
Some incredible Latino filmmakers are making a big splash at this year's Sundance Film Festival, which runs Jan. 16-26 in Park City, Utah.
Besides award-winning Chilean director Sebastián Lelio, whose films include La Sagrada Familia, Navidad, El Año del Tigre and Gloria joining Sundance 2014's World Cinema Dramatic Jury; several strong Latino documentaries are featured this year.
