Daniel Bryan Update: Former UFC Champion Benson Henderson Impressed With WWE Superstar's Jiu-Jitsu Skills
Daniel Bryan has been out of action since April due to neck issues and concussion-like symptoms. He may not be cleared by the WWE to wrestle, but it has not kept the former WWE world heavyweight champion from being busy as he impressed former UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson with his Brazilian jiu-jitsu skills.
Bryan currently lives in Phoenix and has been training MMA at The MMA Lab in Glendale, Arizona. He just earned his blue belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu under John Crouch, Henderson's BJJ coach.
"He was out with some injuries in WWE. He came to our gym and moved up to blue belt in jiu-jitsu under my coach John Crouch. Every time I go in there, he's working his butt off. I heard he was pretty strong and actually surprised me with how technical he is," Henderson told Sporting News.
"A lot of guys have a hard time learning all those techniques. I heard he was really great at being able to use his technique and not relying on his strength. He's smooth and does jiu-jitsu really well," he added.
The 34-year-old WWE superstar is a known MMA practitioner as he has trained at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas, per The Baltimore Sun. Bryan was former roommates with Xtreme Couture's head grappling trainer, Neil Melanson. He has also used his MMA skills when he apprehended a burglar outside his house back in July. According to MMA News, UFC fans know Bryan as the one who adopted Diego Sanchez's "YES! YES! YES!" chant at his weigh-ins and made it very popular both nationally and internationally through WWE.
Inquisitr notes that Bryan's jiu-jitsu skill is a great addition to his style and goes great with his chain-wrestling ability. There is still a risk of getting injured during MMA training just like inside the ring, but with Bryan being allowed to train BJJ, it seems like WWE is really holding him back.
In an interview with IGN, Bryan reveals that his personal doctor has cleared him to wrestle again, but WWE's doctor won't let him due to his history of concussions. Bryan adds that WWE has asked him to see a third doctor, but the results from it have not been revealed.
There is still a chance that WWE will never clear the 34-year-old grappler to wrestle again, but they might still use him to help draw about 100,000 fans inside the AT&T Stadium next year with their plan to make WrestleMania 32 the biggest wrestling event of all time.
