‘The Daily Show’ Returns, Mocks Candidates' New Year's Resolutions [Watch]
With Trevor Noah finally back after his holiday hiatus, "The Daily Show" this week took its usual jabs at Republican presidential candidates for the many gaffes in their campaigns, highlighting their New Year's resolutions in particular.
According to Salon, Noah really honed in on the Fox News New Year's Eve countdown special, which featured the resolutions of several Republican candidates, but no Democrats. In the "Daily Show" segment, Noah mixed clips of the candidates with comedic quips to start the new year of comedy off strongly.
On Fox, Rick Santorum did not speak about his campaign, but rather resolved not to eat any more ice cream from Iowa.
Jeb Bush kept his resolution short and sweet, not quite filling the time Fox had allowed him, which Noah made a few quick jokes out of.
Then there was Donald Trump, whom the network featured as their "special" candidate to do the New Year's Eve countdown. But there was obviously a mix up or a satellite delay, leading Trump and his crew to count down the final five seconds of the year after the ball had already dropped.
As entertaining as Trump's misstep was, Noah's return to the desk would be unsatisfying without time devoted to developments in Ben Carson's campaign. The latest twist in the candidate's path to the White House was the resignation of several top officials, including a communications director.
"What? Ben Carson had a communications director?" Noah said. "What the hell was he teaching him? 'Okay, Ben -- slow down. Slower. Okay, close the eyes. Now that's a president!'"
Noah has made good use of his impersonation of Carson during the primary campaign season, especially critiquing the candidate's hysterically slow responses and calm demeanor. That lackadaisical mood jarringly contrasts Carson's occasional rises to anger, like when he went off on a reporter whom he claimed did not treat Barack Obama with the same amount of scrutiny in the 2008 election.
