Amazon Prime Offers Discounts on Video Games
Thanks to a new program from Amazon, gamers can save 20 percent on all newly released and prepurchased video games.
Amazon introduced the new discount program Tuesday. While new PlayStation 4 and Xbox One games usually sell for $59.99, the program offers 20 percent off new games for the first two weeks after their release and 20 percent off all preorders, Engadget reports.
In order to participate in the program, Amazon users must be Prime subscribers. The 20 percent discount is offered for physical copies of video games only, not digital downloads.
Best Buy offers a similar discount program that also offers 20 percent off physical copies of new video games. Best Buy's Gamer's Club Unlocked is a two-year subscription plan that costs $30. Unlike Amazon's program, Best Buy's discount program is not limited to the first two weeks of a new release, but can be used at any time.
GameStop has a similar promotion called PowerUp Rewards. The program costs $14.99 per year, and it includes 10 percent off pre-owned games and accessories, extra credit for video game trade-ins, a points program, and a 12-month subscription to Game Informer magazine. The program does not include a discount on new games.
A big benefit of Amazon's new program is the savings on preorders. When Prime members preorder a game, they will get the 20 percent off the retail price and receive the game at their home on the same day that it is released in stores.
Amazon Prime members will not see the price of new games lowered until they add the games to a shopping cart. Games must be sold and shipped by Amazon, so games sold by individual sellers will not receive the discount.
Amazon Prime members do not need to do anything to sign up for the video game discount program. The discount is included in prime membership.
Amazon Prime costs $99 per year and comes with free two-day shipping on most items, streaming music and videos, and other added benefits.
If each $59.99 game is discounted by about $12, the Amazon Prime membership would pay for itself after about eight video game purchases in a year.
