Celine Dion Family Tragedy: Canadian Diva’s Brother Dies at 59 Due to Cancer
Celine Dion is facing multiple family tragedies this week as her husband Rene Angélil, 73, and her brother Daniel Dion, 59, lost their battles with cancer. Angélil died on Thursday, Jan. 14, while Daniel died on Saturday, Jan. 16.
The reports on the death of Celine's brother were confirmed by the office of the "My Heart Will Go On" singer's publicist, Francine Chaloult.
According to Us Weekly, Daniel died in the early hours of Saturday morning in Montreal. He had been battling various forms of cancer.
In a statement released by Dion's family, a tribute will be paid to Daniel, who was the eighth of 14 Dion children and a father of two, on Saturday, Jan. 23 at Salon Charles in Repentigny.
In addition, a religious funeral service will also be held several days later at St-Simon-et-Jude in Charlemagne, Quebec, where the Dion family was raised, Entertainment Weekly noted.
Daniel's death came less a than a day after reports circulated that he was dying and two days after the death of Celine's husband, Rene Angélil, who also died of cancer.
"Tribute will be paid at Salon Charles Rajotte in Repentigny, Saturday, January 23 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m," Daniel's obituary read. "A few days later, a religious funeral will take place at St-Simon-et-Jude, in Charlemagne Québec, where the family was raised."
The obituary, which was published in full by People, also revealed that Daniel Dion had spent his last days in the care of the doctors and staff at Maison Adhemar-Dion, a palliative care center in Terrebonne, Quebec.
The family is also remembering Daniel as a "gentle and reserved man of many talents." He is survived by his daughters, Valerie and Marie-Michelle, and grandchildren Matis and Laurianne, E! News has learned.
As for Celine Dion's husband Rene Angélil, the 47-year-old Canadian songstress has shared a tribute as well as the funeral plans for her husband on Facebook, as previously reported. Angélil's funeral will be held at Notre-Dame Basilica in Montreal, the cathedral where he married Dion almost 22 years ago.
Moreover, a wake will also take place at a Chapel of Rest on Thursday, Jan. 21, from 2 p.m. until 9 p.m. It will be followed by a religious service on Friday, Jan. 22 at 3 p.m. While a celebration of Angelil's life will be held on Feb. 3 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Caesars Palace Colosseum in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Due to the recent tragedies in Celine Dion's life, Caesars Palace has announced the cancellation of Dion's weekend shows. She will resume her Las Vegas performances on Feb. 23.
