A considerate husband in California has just helped his wife come into some major Powerball money.
As a CBS affiliate reports, Robert Mendoza of Paramount, CA, decided to purchase a couple of tickets for his wife to make her feel better about not winning this month’s record high Powerball lottery. Purchasing a $10 Silver & Gold Scratcher at a CVS Pharmacy, Mendoza ended up winning a million bucks.
As humble as he is considerate, Mendoza told lottery officials that he would like to just pay off his house, fix it up and then retire.
In other happy Powerball news, 15 Kansas City firefighters won $50,000.
As KSHB News reports, the firefighters of KCFD Station 23 pooled their money to buy tickets for Jan. 13's $1.5 billion Powerball.
The win comes at a particularly good time for the men, as the group recently lost two of their fellow firefighters while battling a blaze back in October.
Dan Utt, a spokesman for the group, recalled the tragedy. “We lost a couple of our brothers that day,” said Utt. “And virtually everyone who was in on this ticket was at that fire.”
Aside from just boosting morale, Utt said the firefighters could all use the extra cash. “Somebody’s getting married, one just got engaged. And some have been injured,” he explained.
