McLaren Is Building A Three-Seater Hybrid Upgrade To The P1, Which Draws Its Inspirations From McLaren F1
Soon McLaren enthusiasts will be drawn to a great surprise from the British Car maker, McLaren Motors. In what seems to be a futuristic plan for the next McLaren sports cars, McLaren's boss, Mike Flewitt told Autocar editors some of the things to expect in a new McLaren Hyper GT car that they are working on currently. The said car is expected to hit the market in 2019, where it will tag itself an estimated price of not less than $2 Million.
Then what's the big deal in this McLaren F1/P1 marriage product? Well, the car which is code-named the McLaren BP23 will feature a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which will; be enhanced with a touch of Hybrid. According to Autocar, the BP23 will possess an electric powertrain which will push it to the limits.
Despite the fact it's a hybrid, this car will be way faster than the P1. How they did that, nobody knows but you can expect that, especially if the manufacturer has had a reputation of building cars that are practically illegal to drive on the streets.
McLaren's F1 is not a street legal vehicle because of the neck-breaking speeds that this car cruises on, not to mention the noise pollutions that F1's come with. All the same, the BP23 will use an engine that resembles that of the F1 but they will have to think of some way to keep the noise down. That is if the car will be legalised for street driving.
However, Writer Hut explained that converting a high-performance vehicle into a hybrid would mean that the car would need a larger chassis; and possibly result in an increase in weight, due to the extra electrical equipment to be installed in the car.
This is a concern that Mike Flewitt came out clearly to confirm, citing that the BP23 will have an extra 140kg baggage from the P1, due to hybridization. Mike has since remained silent on how McLaren will chop off the extra weight, but it sure has to be chopped.
High-Performance sports cars like the Bugatti Veyron or the Lamborghini Aventador are made of extremely light materials, usually carbon Fibre bodies. If the McLaren BP23 is going to compete against such vehicles, then Hybridization will only make the journey tougher.
