Game Over: Video Game Expo Cancelled Due to COVID-19 Scare
An important video gaming convention that has been scheduled to take over Los Angeles Convention Center in June, namely the Electronic Entertainment Expo, will be cancelled due to concerns regarding the coronavirus outbreak.
Recently coronavirus was reported in Europe and the United States which was initially suspected to have begun in China.
This outbreak has already affected participants, specifically as the 2020 Game Developers Conference (GDC) has indefinitely been postponed because of the epidemic concern.
This decision has been made after several developers who typically participate in GDC decided to cancel their presence on the event in their fear of the coronavirus outbreak.
According to sources, E3 is said to be the most recent big event to be cancelled following the new coronavirus. An unnamed source, known about the issue, quoted a published article which stated that Wednesday was scheduled to cancel the event at 9:30 a.m. PT, or 12:30 p.m. ET.
While it is a little too soon to know what could take place until June when the expo happens, there are only increasing concerns about the virus, which potentially interfere with transportation into and out of the show particularly with certain airline companies that have already restricted international flights as well as deterring potential participants.
In a confidential memorandum to partners on Tuesday, the ESA, which arranges the event formally known as E3, has stated that it will explore other options for this summer's virtual E3 gathering.
In addition to this, E3 is the yearly showcase conference of the video gaming industry, which normally features big announcements regarding upcoming consoles and games. Amongst the top names revealing games included Nintendo, Microsoft and 2 K in the E3 2019.
Gaming companies and developers are also depending on the convention to review the market, to collect their reports and to purchase road test games.
E3 is rumored to join a rising sea of events that have been canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak that spreads throughout the world.
This involves technology conferences, and important events in Austin, Texas, including the South by Southwest Festival. In a reaction to the current outbreak, even an event based on the Coronavirus was repelled this week.
However, several big players had left the event before even the cancellation. Most noticeably, for the second consecutive year Sony was skipping the E3 convention and even Geoff Keighley who has organized the famous E3 live stream shows in past years, would also not be able to take part.
E3 seems to be becoming less prominent in the video game industry as it stands.
Even though it was once the largest event of the year, as corporations announce new games, consoles and innovation-it could still be argued that the event has lost relevance ever since.
Despite E3 being less significant, the coronavirus issue may indicate that it can look like a ghost town if the 2020 convention happens.
E3 organizers, scheduled for early June, planned to track and take the appropriate action of the situation regularly through the Disease Control and Prevention Centers and the World Health Organization.
