Pres. Joe Biden Receives Backlash After Announcing Moves to Address Baby Formula Shortage
President Joe Biden received a backlash from parents on Wednesday after he announced his administration's moves to address the ongoing baby formula shortage across the U.S.
Several commenters were quick to criticize Biden's move online, with some of the users expressing their thoughts on Twitter.
One user called Biden's moves a "horrible idea," contending that the government does not address the issue even though they know that it is coming. Another commenter said that the moves announced by the president should have been done weeks ago.
"Biden's admin is utterly worthless and incompetent," the commenter wrote.
Meanwhile, a New York resident named Jordan Lewis shared with the Daily Mail what he thinks about Biden's announcement.
Lewis said they are "stunned" that the Biden administration took a long time to react to the situation, and that the U.S. is still vulnerable to baby formula shortage even though it is known to be one of the most wealthy and powerful nations.
Baby Formula Shortage: Pres. Joe Biden Announces Defense Production Act and Operation Fly Formula
The backlash was hurled against President Joe Biden after he announced the Defense Production Act as well as the Operation Fly Formula, in an effort to address the ongoing baby formula shortage in the country.
The White House confirmed that the Defense Production Act will require suppliers to direct the needed resources to infant formula manufacturers before any other customer who may have ordered that good, according to a Fox News report.
The White House explained that directing firms to allocate the production of infant formulas will aid in increasing the production and will speed up the supply chain.
The Biden administration also introduced the Operation Fly Formula which will speed up the import of infant formula and get more formula in the U.S. stores as soon as possible.
This move will also allow the Defense Department to use its contracts with commercial airlines to transport the formula back to the United States.
On Tuesday, President Joe Biden also wrote a letter to health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra and USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack, urging them to act amid the baby formula shortage.
"I request that you work expeditiously to identify any and all avenues to speed the importation of safe infant formula into the United States and onto store shelves," Biden said in the letter.
The president also requested the officials to work with the Defense Department next week in utilizing the contracted aircraft to speed up the arrival of infant formulas that meets the nation's health and safety standard into the United States.
Baby Formula Shortage
Biden's announcement came after the supply of baby formulas in the United States decreased by 40 percent in April.
According to The Hill, the baby formula shortage stemmed from the recall of several products from Abbott Nutrition in February. The recall was issued after two infants reportedly died after ingesting some of the company's products produced in Sturgis, Michigan.
Abbott Nutrition is known to be one of the nation's largest producers of baby formula. The company recalled several of its products such as Similac, Alimentum, and EleCare, after discovering evidence of Cronobacter sakazakii.
