'Pacific Rim 2' Update: What do we Know so Far?
Kaiju and Jaeger fans, get ready: There are more updates for the "Pacific Rim 2" sequel.
The planned "Pacific Rim 2" release date is set for April 7, 2017. The Latin Post also knows about who will perhaps be returning and how Guillermo del Toro, the Mexican filmmaker and the film's original director, intends on reintroducing the big movie domestic failure back to its audiences.
Del Toro expressed in an interview with the BuzzFeed that he is looking forward to bringing back characters Raleigh played by Charlie Hunnam, Mako played by Rinko Kikuchi, Burn Gorman's Gottlieb, and perhaps Ron Perlman of "Hell Boy" fame, as Hannibal Chau.
At the moment, del Toro revealed on YouTube (video below this article), that he will be working with Zak Penn, the writer of "The Incredible Hulk," "The Avengers" and "X-Men: The Last Stand." Del Toro will also be working with the original writer of "Pacific Rim," Travis Beacham, who is now currently working on "Hieroglyphics."
As reported by this publication earlier this month, del Toro revealed that he will not be doing a prequel as some would suggest. He said that he was never intrigued to do a "first-wave invasion" of the Kaijus (pronounced Kai-juus); instead, Del Toro wants to go crazy on this second film.
"I'm going for very new, very crazy ideas on the second one, but you will get a really great spectacle," del Toro said.
The A.V. Club reported that del Toro will feature "more Kaijus, more Jaegers, kicking each other's butts." Del Toro also announced that between now and the film's release in 2017 that they will be continuing the "Pacific Rim" comic book series, and they will be launching an animated series before the film debuts.
The comic book and animated series could perhaps prop up the new back story that del Toro intends for the sequel.
"Pacific Rim" is set in the 2020s with Earth living in a world where they are under constant threat by the Kaijus, Godzilla-type monsters, who came to our world via a hidden dimension located at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, Variety reported. The world had to create giant "Jaegers" (pronounced Yeah-gahs) to destroy the creatures. The Jaegers machines had to be piloted by two humans who were biologically linked. The characters of Hunnam and Kikuchi had to be linked together, although they were not biologically related. The film also featured Jaeger commander Stacker Pentecost played by Idris Elba.
The 2013 "Pacific Rim" cost nearly $200 million to make, but when it was released that summer, it only made $101 million in the U.S. However, internationally the film made $310 million, and it was No. 1 at China's box office with $114 million, Variety reported. So worldwide the film made over $400 million.
The international box office results were perhaps the deciding factor in the continuation of the "Pacific Rim" franchise despite the failure in the States.
