Haiti's new Prime Minister, Garry Conille, was hospitalized Saturday after a respiratory emergency at his mother-in-law's house in Boutillier, near the capital.

He was taken to a private hospital in Pétion-Ville where his condition was stabilized, the Miami Herald reports.

Despite improvements, doctors are running tests to determine if he needs evacuation due to Haiti's limited medical resources after recent violence.

Conille, 58, was reportedly talking and his blood pressure stabilized.

The Prime Minister's Office stated he experienced a "slight malaise" after a busy week and is now stable.

Conille, a development expert with the United Nations, was appointed by Haiti's transitional presidential council to lead the new transitional government.

He arrived in Port-au-Prince from Miami a week ago and has been working to form a government amidst tensions with the council over its size and composition.

His formal swearing-in has yet to occur, limiting his powers.

Gang Violence and Its Impact

Haiti gang violence continues unabated, with three police officers killed and a fourth missing on Sunday, according to the police union Synapoha.

These officers were part of a new anti-gang unit.

The violence has forced about 60% of hospitals in the capital area to close, as gangs loot pharmacies and doctors stay home to avoid conflict.

Newly appointed Haiti Prime Minister Garry Conille faces the challenge of tackling Haiti gang violence and extreme poverty.

Inflation is at 29%, and gangs control 80% of Port-au-Prince, displacing over 360,000 people.

They also disrupt key routes, affecting the transportation of essential goods, according to AP News.

Conille's predecessor, Ariel Henry, resigned in April following severe gang attacks.

The government is awaiting a UN-backed police force from Kenya and other nations to help restore order.

Conille, who has asthma, was hospitalized after experiencing breathing difficulties but appeared hopeful in a video on Sunday.

He aims to form a government and address Haiti's crises. Conille, a former Prime Minister and UNICEF regional director has been meeting with stakeholders to establish his cabinet soon.

The Escalating Violence and International Support

Gang violence has intensified in Haiti, particularly in Port-au-Prince, amid efforts to oust the unpopular Ariel Henry, who became Prime Minister after President Jovenel Moise's 2021 assassination.

Henry agreed to step down, transferring power to a transitional council, VOA noted.

Before his health scare, Garry Conille, the new Haiti Prime Minister, praised security forces at the international airport, where flights had resumed after gang attacks halted them.

Violence has severely impacted food security and humanitarian access, with gangs controlling much of the capital.

Kenya plans to send 1,000 police officers to aid Haiti's police, with other countries also contributing.

Though delayed, Kenya's President William Ruto expects deployment within weeks.

Conille, appointed by the transition council, aims to restore stability and counter gang control.

The council, holding some presidential powers, must hold elections by February 2026 per Haiti's constitution.

Conille's extensive UN experience is vital for securing international support for the UN-backed security mission led by Kenya, despite facing delays.
