Jaguar Unveils 'Virtual Widescreen' Technology to Assist Drivers
Luxury car-maker Jaguar Land Rover revealed a high-tech windshield concept that would offer users practical as well as fun options to enhance their driving experience.
The "virtual widescreen" displays hazards, the driver's speed, and navigation icons on the screen so the driver never has to take their eyes off the road, according to Top Gear.
"Showing virtual images that allow the driver to accurately judge speed and distance will enable better decision-making and offer real benefits for everyday driving on the road or the track," said Wolfgang Epple, research and technology director at Jaguar.
It also has video game-like options for performance drivers who visit racing circuits.
In race mode, the windshield will display racing lines, braking guidance, and a ghost car, according to Daily Tech.
The ghost car is a rendition of the driver's car during laps, or data stored can recall another person's drive, so the driver can try to outrace them.
This technology is one of the newest applications of augmented reality, which uses the real world and space around an object and enhances it with computer graphics or real-time information.
While the concept has been created for racing use, it has practical applications as well, according to SlashGear.
In addition, the car company is working on a new type of sensing system for touchscreens. It will be able to sense a person's touch up to 15 cm away, and will be called e-field sensing.
By comparison, smartphones can detect touch from 5 mm away, according to Top Gear.
While the windshield is still in developmental stages, a spokesperson told Mashable that it sees production beginning in about 10 years.
Jaguar has already shown off other augmented reality display concepts, including a see-through hood and sunroof. These, similar to the windshield, can project helpful information and allow real-time information to help the driver during low-visibility driving, according to Mashable.
