Golf fans have got everything they could have hoped for with this year's 2014 British Open.

All of the big names such as Tiger Woods, Sergio García, Phil Mickelson, Adam Scott and Rory McIlroy showed up to compete at Royal Liverpool for a chance to win golfs third major. Surprisingly, the weather has been golfer friendly all three days, which has resulted in high scores.

After three days of play, here are the five biggest headlines leading into the Sunday final:

1. Rory McIlroy Extends Lead

It looked as if Day 3 was going to be a disappointing one for McIlroy. He entered the day with a slight lead over Dustin Johnson and after 12 holes, he was even par. At one point, he had actually surrendered his lead to Rickie Fowler, and both were tied at 11-under-par. But that wouldn't last. McIlroy shot 4-under-par on the final five holes, which include two incredible eagles on 16 and 18.

McIlroy is 16-under-par after three days of play and has a six shot lead.

2. Rickie Fowler Makes His Move

Fowler entered Day 2 at 6-under-par. He would shoot 4-under-par on day two and even tied McIlroy at one point. Unfortunately for him, McIlroy ended his day on a phenomenal run, and Fowler was just too inconsistent. Holes 14,16, and 17 all resulted in a bogey, but Fowler did birdie on 18 to end his day. He finished his day by shooting four strokes under.

Fowler is 10-under-par after three days which is good enough for second place. To win, he would need an incredible Sunday and a major meltdown by McIlroy.

3. Sergio García Continues Great Run

García finished his day with five birdies and two bogeys, good enough for a 3-under-par day. He is currently tied with Dustin Johnson for third place and is the highest-ranked Spanish born golfer remaining. García has a slim chance at winning his first British Open title, but anything can happen on the final day.

García is 9-under-par after three rounds, tied for third place. He is seven shots behind McIlroy.

4. Charl Schwartzel Breaks Even

The 29-year-old South African had one of the most impressive second days when he shot a 67. Charl Schwartzel was 6-under-par after two days and there was no reason to believe he couldn't compete for the British Open title. He did after all win the 2011 Masters at Augusta. Schwartzel's third day resulted in four birdies and four bogeys giving him a total three day score of 6-under-par.

Schwartzel is six shots under and is tied for seventh place.

5. Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, and Ángel Cabrera Out of Contention

With only one day remaining, golfers are going to have to be at 5-under-par at minimum to contend for the championship.

Woods had a great first day by shooting 3-under-par, but his day two was horrific at five over and day three he shot 1-over-par. Woods is now tied for 58th place. Phil Mickelson had a terrible day one and just couldn't recover after shooting a combined 3-under-par for Friday and Saturday. Ángel Cabrera was similar to Mickelson. He too, had a terrible opening day and his recovery attempt was good, but just not good enough. The 44-year-old Argentinean shot a horrific 4-over-par on day one and 5-under-par for Friday and Saturday combined.
