San Francisco 49ers News: Vernon Davis Ends Holdout, Reports to Training Camp
Vernon Davis has ended his holdout with the San Francisco 49ers and has reported to camp.
Since being drafted by the 49ers in 2006 with the No. 6 overall pick, Davis has been one of the best tight ends in the league. Although he has never amassed 1,000 yards in a season, he is arguably the most consistent and dependable tight end in all of football.
Davis has only missed one game the last six seasons and plays an integral role in this offense. Anquan Boldin is the main target with his speedy downfield abilities and powerful one-on-one skills. Boldin had 1,179 receiving yards last season. Boldin and Davis are one of the best, if not the best, tight end and wide receiver duos in the NFL.
There's no denying that the 49ers are one of the best teams in the entire National Football League. They came ever so close last season to winning the NFC, until quarterback Colin Kaepernick turned the ball over three times against the Seattle Seahawks in the fourth quarter alone.
Although Davis is a great tight end who almost never misses games and has great hands, it was extremely unlikely that was ever going to get a new contract. Davis is still the fourth highest paid tight end in all of football and still has two years remaining on his six year contract. That contract, in 2010, was signed for six years, $42.7 million, and $23 million guaranteed. That's still big time money.
Even though the New Orleans Saints recently paid Jimmy Graham a record high for a tight end, the 49ers were wise not to give in. The 49ers foundation and base is still in their defense. That's the biggest reason they have made it to the last three consecutive NFC Championship games. Davis is a big target for Kaepernick, but overpaying for his services would only hurt the team's salary cap.
The 49ers knew Davis would eventually concede and show up before the preseason began. They know that he wants to win his first career Super Bowl badly.
The 49ers aren't completely out of the woods just yet. Their offensive guard, Alex Boone, still hasn't reported to camp and is seeking a new contract. The 49ers are one of the best teams in the NFL when it comes to quarterback protection, as much of their sacks allowed are when Kaepernick is scrambling and extending the play.
Boone has played and started all 32 regular season games for the 49ers over the last two years. Boone is still just 27 years old and provides a big body (330 pounds) protecting and clearing a path for Frank Gore to run by. Boone is still making less than $2.5 in guaranteed money and the two sides are still reportedly not even close on a new deal.
The 49ers first preseason game begins on Aug. 7 against the Baltimore Ravens.
