MLB Trade Deadline Rumors 2014: New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, and Other Teams Who Could Make Moves
The Major League Baseball season has hit the 100 game mark for every team, and with that, the July 31 annual trade deadline threatens to shake up the baseball world as teams look to push towards the playoffs.
Owners and general managers know by now what team needs should be addressed going forward. The 2014 MLB trade deadline is looming as Thursday draws near and here are some of the hottest trade rumors that are heating up:
Rays Listening to Offers
The Tampa Bay Rays are "open to trading" their starting pitcher David Price, but only if they get a lot of value back in return. Price has been on trade block for weeks now, but no team has emerged as the frontrunner. Price has said that he's "bothered" by all the trade rumors, but that's just business. There's a good chance the Rays will keep their 28-year-old ace, but you never know.
Troy Tulowitzki Unlikely to be Traded
Tulowitzki is having another fantastic season. He's batting a career-high .340 at the plate and has hit 21 home runs along with more than 100 hits. He's played his entire career with the Colorado Rockies and it looks like he will remain in Colorado next season. The Rockies have said they won't trade him unless they get the "trade of the century." The New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, or Los Angeles Dodgers might be able to give the Rockies what they want.
Jonathan Papelbon on the Move?
The Philadelphia Phillies haven't been the same since they won the World Series in 2008. It might be time to rebuild and get value while they still can. It's very unlikely that Cliff Lee will be traded because of his high cost. The Los Angeles Dodgers and Detroit Tigers are both rumored to be in the mix to make a run at Jonathan Papelbon. Papelbon has already said he will waive the no-trade clause in his contract if he remains a closer, so there should be no issue here.
Matt Kemp to Beantown?
The Dodgers are in first place, while the Boston Red Sox are in last place. A trade between the two could be looming, one that could send Matt Kemp to the Red Sox and possibly Jon Lester to Los Angeles. Kemp's power numbers have been decreasing for some time, but he still gets on base. Lester is having a great year pitching, with just a 2.52 ERA on a subpar Red Sox team.
The Major League Baseball trade deadline is July 31, so it will be interesting to see which teams pull off a last-minute deal that may change the course of the season.
