Finally, the PGA Championship is here. The final major of the golf year is upon us, and fans get one last chance to watch their favorite players win a major until the Masters next April. For the players on tour, they know this is their final opportunity to make their mark on golf history.

Just last month, we saw an exciting British Open at the Royal Liverpool. Rory McIlroy won the tournament, his third career major, and he is now the No. 1-ranked golfer in the world.

The PGA Championship is viewed by most as the least difficult major of the four. There are a lot of story-lines heading into this year's PGA Championship. Tiger Woods is still looking to end the longest drought of his professional career. Although Woods has won 14 career majors, he hasn't won a single one since the 2008 US Open. Woods is now facing back issues, and is coming off a terrible performance at the British Open, where he finished 69th overall.

The man to watch is Rory McIlroy. McIlroy has done very well at the this event in the past. He previously won the PGA Championship in 2012, and has three other top 10 finishes. The 25-year-old from Northern Ireland could be the "next big thing" in golf.

Other names to keep an eye are Adam Scott, Sergio Garcia and Phil Mickelson. Scott is ranked No. 2 in the world, and has been of the best in recent years. Although he hasn't won the PGA Championship yet, he has placed in the top 10 on four different occasions. In his three majors this year, he has placed 15th, 9th and 5th place. Only the winner gets remembered, and Scott knows that.

Garcia is still chasing his first major championship. The 34-year-old from Spain played fantastic at the British Open, placing second. He surged on the final Sunday, but it was just too little, too late. Of course, a lot of eyes will be on "lefty." Mickelson won this competition in 2005, but he hasn't placed in the top 10 since. With Woods playing the worst golf of his career, Mickelson knows he has to take advantage of this opportunity.

Where and When

This year's PGA Championship will be played at the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky. The last time the PGA Championship was played there was in 1996, when Mark Brooks won it all. The tournament will run from Thursday, Aug. 7 through Sunday Aug. 10, and can be seen on TNT. The first pairing will tee off at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday with Roberto Castro, Russell Knox and Brian Norman leading the way.

Prediction

Rory McIlroy will be the favorite, and deservingly so. Serio Garcia will be in the mix, as well as Mickleson. However, this writer believes that Adam Scott will be victorious because of his extraordinary putting and consistent play.
