Lil Wayne Shuts Down HIV Rumors : #PrayForWeezy Hashtag Trending on Social Media Since Fake Report on 'Believe Me' Rapper's Health
Lil Wayne has found himself the victim of a celebrity death hoax once again, this time with reports claiming he has contracted HIV.
Daily Leakz recently suggested that the New Orleans emcee planned on making an official announcement soon to confirm the news.
"Lil Wayne of Y.M.C.M.B. came out publicly today and revealed that he has contracted H.I.V," the site published. "Our sources tell us that later on this week he is going to make a formal announcement to the media and fans."
The gossip website then furthered the rumor by quoting a made-up statement by Lil Wayne.
"However he did give positive words of advice, 'Sometimes you get caught up with the strippers and groupies... Just wear protection.' #Prayforweezy," Daily Leakz continued.
In addition to reporting that the Young Money rapper is HIV positive, the tabloid site posted a fake photo of his family and friends visiting him at a hospital, including a woman appearing to be his protégé Nicki Minaj.
The story immediately went viral, and the hashtags concerning the "Believe Me" hitmaker's health, "#PrayForWeezy" and "#PrayForLilWayne," were trending on social media this week.
However, Weezy took to his Twitter account on Aug. 6 to shut down the ridiculous rumors.
"B-tch, ya mammy got AIDS. Stop playing with me," he wrote.
He has since deleted the tweet.
Meanwhile, the "Lollipop" rapper finally kicked off the highly anticipated "Drake vs. Lil Wayne" joint summer tour on Friday night at the Darien Lake Performing Arts Center in Darien, New York. He is set to perform on Saturday at the Klipsch Music Center in Noblesville, Indiana.
Lil Wayne previously revealed what fans can expect from his 31-city tour.
"Since, thank god we've been so successful, [we'll just be] going back and forth with our hits and getting the crowd to go crazy, then just finally hit the stage together," he told MTV News. "It's battle type thing."
