The 2014 Ryder Cup is here, and Day 1 is complete.

The United States and Europe have always had a big golf rivalry with one another over the years. Notables such as Jack Nicklaus and Nick Faldo representing their native countries on the course, battling for golf supremacy.

In recent years, Europe has dominated this match-up, winning seven of the last nine competitions going back to 1995. The United States hasn't won on European soil since 1993, when the Ryder Cup was played in Scotland:

Day 1 Review

To no one's surprise, Europe leads the United States after the first day.

Despite the fact that Rory McIlrory, Sergio Garcia and Ian Poulter all didn't win, Europe leads 5-3 after the first day. In the foursomes set, Europe won three of the four matches. In foursomes, each team play the same ball.

  1. Lee Westwood and Jamie Donaldson defeated Jim Furyk and Matt Kuchar.
  2. Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson defeated Hunter Mahan and Zach Johnson.
  3. Victor Dubuisson and Graeme McDowell defeated Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley.
  4. Jimmy Walker and Rickie Fowler tied with Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia.

Then, there was fourball. In fourball, each golfer plays his own ball.

  1. Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed defeated Stephen Gallacher and Ian Poulter
  2. Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley defeated Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia
  3. Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson defeated Tom Watson and Webb Simpson
  4. Rickie Fowler and Jimmy Walker tied with Thomas Bjorn and Martin Kaymer

Day 2 Preview and Matches

The second day starts early for golf fans in the United States, 2:35 a.m. EST to be exact.

  1. Tom Watson and Mat Kuchar against Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson. 2:35 am.
  2. Jim Furyk and Hunter Mahan against Lee Westwood and Jamie Donaldson. 2:50 a.m.
  3. Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed against Thomas Bjorn and Martin Kaymer. 3:05 a.m.
  4. Rickie Fowler and Jimmy Walker against Rory McIlroy and Ian Poulter. 3:20 a.m.

All times listed above are Eastern American time zone.

The captain for team USA is Tom Watson. Watson had a tremendous PGA career winning eight major championships. He was actually the captain for the 1993 squad that won in Europe. Paul McGinley is the captain for Team Europe.

Even though Tiger Woods isn't there to represent America, the last time he was missing from the Ryder Cup, the United States won back in 2008. Hopefully for America, history can repeat itself.
