NFC East Running Backs Lead NFL Thanks to DeMarco Murray, Rashad Jennings and Alfred Morris
After four weeks of play, the NFC East has been tearing up the National Football League on the ground. Despite having notable quarterbacks such as Tony Romo, Eli Manning, Robert Griffin III and Nick Foles, the running backs have been showing off their talents early on.
Amazingly, three of the top five leading rushers so far this season are from the NFC East.
Dallas Cowboys
DeMarco Murray has been absolutely outstanding in these first four games. Murray leads the entire NFL with 534 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns so far. His 99 carries also lead the league. The Dallas Cowboys are currently 3-1 thanks to Murray and their great offensive line. Murray has almost 170 yards more than the second leading rusher, Pittsburgh Steelers' own Le'Veon Bell. Murray is on pace for more than 2,000 rushing yards this season.
It is amazing what happens when the Cowboys and Jason Garrett finally decide to run the ball.
New York Giants
Rashad Jennings has proven to be one of the best pickups of the off-season. The New York Giants signed Jennings off free agency for just $3 million guaranteed, and it is paying off big time. Jennings ranks third in the NFL in rushing yards with 341. With David Wilson's retirement, it is imperative that Jennings provide a good ground game. The Giants are currently 2-2, riding a two-game win streak. Jennings and Eli Manning have shown to be a great combination so far.
Washington Redskins
It has been a rough start for the 1-3 Washington Redskins. Losses against the Giants, Houston Texans and Philadelphia Eagles have been disappointing. Even though the Redskins are 1-3, running back Alfred Morris ranks fifth overall in rushing with 316 yards on the ground. Morris has been a very reliable back for the Redskins rushing for 1,613 yards his rookie season and 1,275 yards last season. Morris has recorded 23 touchdowns so far in his young career. Even though the Redskins are in for a rough 2014 season, they know they have a solid starter for years to come.
Philadelphia Eagles
This is the biggest surprise. Despite having the most established running back in the division, LeSean McCoy, the Philadelphia Eagles rank No. 27 overall in team rushing. McCoy is off to a slow start with just 192 yards on 2.7 yards per carry. Darren Sproles has done a fantastic job catching passes out of the backfield, but has just 121 rushing yards in four games. Maybe sharing the ball too often is costing McCoy rushing yards. There is a good chance that head coach Chip Kelly will fix things, and McCoy will eventually find his rhythm.
