Star Wars Episode 7 Rumors, Spoilers & Cast: Will Luke Skywalker Be A Sith Villain?
"Star Wars Episode VII" is currently in production and drawing tremendous attention for a number of major spoilers going around.
The most recent spoilers dealt with Luke Skywalker's position in the new trilogy and whether he could potentially be the next villain of the franchise.
The rumor came from a reputable source known as Making Star Wars, which has produced credible stories in the past.
But even the author of that post on the Luke rumor notes that "There are pieces of this puzzle missing. There are things I don't understand. There are things that don't really add up unless you've seen what I've seen. Does that make sense? I hope it does. Just remember, I have reason to believe in this possibility right now. This is informed speculation. This could all be wrong, but the rumors and the pictures are painting another picture."
That is probably the case. And here are some reasons why:
Worshipping the Original Trilogy
J.J. Abrams is a huge fan of the original trilogy. And he has set out to do things the way the original movies were done. That means less CGI and many more practical effects. He is shooting on film instead of digital like the last two prequels were done. He is even bringing back the characters from the original films.
He loves those movies and it is highly unlikely that he is going to destroy their lore on his watch. Not a chance. And that is precisely what turning Luke into an evil cyborg would do.
In "Return of the Jedi," Luke defeated Darth Vader after giving into his anger and hate. He stood on the precipice of the dark side and destroyed his own father's hand. But in that moment, when he was about to turn completely, he stopped himself, turned to the evil emperor Palpatine and uttered some of the most powerful words in the entire franchise.
"Never. I'll never turn to the Dark Side. You've failed, your highness. I am a Jedi, like my father before me."
And then he gets zapped by electricity, thus inducing his fallen father to rise again and redeem himself. Luke has not only resisted the temptation to fall to the dark side, but by doing so, has resurrected the good in his father and redeemed him.
Does anyone really think that Abrams is going to destroy that?
Moreover, if Luke was not driven to the dark side by the evil emperor or the possibility of working alongside his own father to rule the galaxy, then what could possibly drive him to that point decades later?
Luke could certainly be conflicted over his feelings and struggle. He is, after all, human and, based on Star Wars lure anyways, started the training too late in his life. But to see him as an evil cyborg? There is simply no chance of that happening.
Disney & Its Marketing
From a financial standpoint, that would be a bold but hugely dangerous move. And Disney is not a risktaker.
The company knows how to make money, but to claim that Disney takes risks with its storytelling would not be true. The company wants to please its fans and does so by catering to the fans unabashedly. There are no attempts to trample on their expectations (though some might certainly argue that the treatment of the Mandarin in "Iron Man 3" was a huge risk and destroyed fan expectations) in the form of killing major heroes or destroying their integrity. How would it look if the company took an iconic hero and destroyed his mythos? How do you market that? A decision like that would divide the audience and potentially alienate the very Star Wars fans that the company is catering to. It could potentially have an even more polarizing effect than the prequel films.
And there is no chance Disney wants to repeat that.
Mark Hamill's Beard
This one has less to do with story and more to do with common sense. Mark Hamill has been showing off a beard everywhere he goes for the last few weeks. The pictures leaked of the cyborg do not show a man with a beard. So is everyone expected to intuit that Hamill and Abrams concocted a plan to throw fans off? Is he really walking around with a fake beard? It simply makes no sense.
