NYCC 2014 Batman 75th Anniversary: Panelists Take a Trip Down Memory Lane [Watch]
The voice of Batman started off the final 75th Anniversary panel for DC Comics just right.
"I am vengeance," Kevin Conroy said. "I am the night. I am Batman!"
The New York Comic-Con event was moderated by John Cunningham, and he introduced Conroy, Chief Creative Officer of DC Entertainment Geoff Johns, Neal Adams, Greg Capullo, Greg Snyder and Jim Lee.
When asked about their favorite villain, a few said The Joker.
For example, Conroy said it's "partly because of what Mark Hamill brought to the character, and because so many people can do something new with him."
"Batman: The Complete TV Series" is being released on DVD and Blu-ray on Nov. 11, which made the panelists reminisce about their own history with Batman.
For example, Lee explained how he was terrified by The Joker, whose mustache was still visible under his makeup.
"I was very happy when that show was coming out because it was a Batman show," Adams said. "I tried to suspend my disbelief throughout that show until Jill St. John climbed up on top of a cyclotron, fell in, and Batman said 'What a way to go-go.' That was pretty much it for me. Sorry!"
A few of the panelists were also deeply influenced by the "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns" comic. So much so that, for some of them, it was the reason they got into working in comic books.
For Conroy, who's beloved as the voice of the superhero on "Batman: The Animated Series" as well as on several video games, shared how a young woman in Chicago talked to him about how inspiration Batman was to her. She said he kept her "sane and off the streets" when she was growing up in bad neighborhoods.
He explained that he hears stories like this a lot, and that people also ask him what it is they can learn from the caped vigilante.
"Never ever give up," Conroy said. "He never does, and you can't either."
Watch these two animated Batman shorts created for 75th anniversary, which were later screened at Comic-Con.
