Latin Social Media Roundup: Salma Hayek and Adriana Barraza Get Their Activism On
Taking a look at Latino celebrities on social media this week, actresses Salma Hayek and Adriana Barraza are out saving the world one step at a time.
Hayek took to Twitter to tweet about her advocacy in women's rights. She was honored at an Equality Now event, Make Equality Right, in Beverly Hills on Monday.
"Coalition against violence and hate... Help evolve the human race. #makeequalityreality," she tweeted.
The actress recently talked about how she got Avon to support her campaign while she was in negotiations to represent the brand, according to MailOnline. Initially, she was only supposed to represent the cosmetics giant in cancer research. Since her negotiation, Avon has raised over $90 million in the fight against domestic violence.
"Everybody thinks they believe in justice, but how can we justify being silent, in an era that is so saturated? We know what's going on," the Mexican beauty tweeted. "With conviction and compassion comes commitment. Each person must take the power."
Later, she re-tweeted a post from the organization Chime for Change about female circumcision.
"Amran Mohamud spent 15 years cutting girls," the post read. "She remembers the girls who wouldn't stop bleeding."
Meanwhile, Oscar-nominated actress Barraza re-tweeted a post that she was mentioned in about the "Free Nestora Salgado" protest.
Salgado is an activist of Human Rights Indigenous people who was wrongfully incarcerated in a high security detention center of El Rincon, Nayarit. Protesters say she was arrested for crimes she did not commit, and there are currently over 6,000 supporters on the Change.org petition for her release.
Barraza also posted an ad about an acting studio that states there are no formulas for acting, hoping to inspire aspiring actors as well.
According to TheWrap, Barraza recently joined the cast of Netflix's new series "Narcos."
