La Liga Standings & Schedule: Real Madrid in First Place, Ahead of Barcelona for Spanish League Title
The 2014-15 La Liga season has been an exciting one so far.
As usual, most eyes are on the rivalry of Real Madrid and Barcelona. These two Spanish clubs have dominated the soccer world, winning more than 50 combined La Liga Championships. Atletico Madrid came out victorious last season with a league-leading 90 points to win their 10th championship.
This season has been off to a exciting start for fans.
So far after just 10 games of play, Real Madrid leads the league with 24 points. Real Madrid has an impressive record of 8-0-2. The only losses for Real Madrid this season have come against Atletico Madrid and a very disappointing loss to Real Sociedad.
In their last La Liga game, Real Madrid dominated Granada, 4-0. Colombian superstar James Rodriguez scored two goals in that game.
Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo leads the league with 17 goals this season. Ronaldo's 17 goals this season lead the entire league by a very wide margin. The second most goals in La Liga belong to Barcelona's own Neymar, who has nine. Toni Kroos and French striker Karim Benzema both lead Real Madrid with five assists each.
Real Madrid's powerful offense has produced the most goals in the league with 37, as well as the highest goal differential with an amazing plus 27. Valencia has the second highest goal differential at just plus 14.
Although Real Madrid has been a dominating force offensively, Barcelona has the edge in defense and goalkeeping.
We all know Iker Casillas is a great goalkeeper, having played for Spain in the FIFA World Cup multiple times, but Claudio Bravo of Barcelona has the edge so far this season. While Real Madrid has allowed 10 goals in 10 games, Barcelona has allowed just four goals in their 10 games of play.
Lionel Messi is considered one of the greatest players in the game today, and he is showing it off with his extraordinary passing skills. Although Neymar leads Barcelona with nine goals, Messi has a team-leading seven assists. Opposing teams are double teaming Messi, assuming he will shoot, but the young 27-year-old Argentinean is beating opponents with pin-point passing. Messi's seven assists are tied for the league lead with Jorge Merodio of Atletico Madrid.
After a 2-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid on Sep. 13, Real Madrid has won their last seven consecutive games, the most in all of La Liga.
Carlo Ancelotti has done a great job as Real Madrid's coach this season.
Barcelona began the season with seven victories and a tie against Malaga. Unfortunately for Barcelona, they have lost their last two consecutive games. Real Madrid defeated Barcelona on Oct. 25, 3-1. Ronaldo, Pepe and Benzema all scored for Real Madrid, while only Neymar could score for Barcelona.
Barcelona's next game is against Almeria. Real Madrid's next game is against Rayo Vallecano. Both games will be played on Saturday, Nov 8. Real Madrid and Barcelona will not face each other until March 22 at Barcelona.
The season still has nearly 28 games remaining to be played, and soccer fans are in for a lot of great action down the stretch.
