La Liga News: Will Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo Break Barcelona's Lionel Messi Single Season Goal Record? [Poll]
The 2014-15 La Liga season is 13 weeks complete, and a lot of storylines are on the horizon.
Atletico Madrid is trying to defend their league title, Lionel Messi has become the all-time scorer in La Liga history and Chilean goalkeeper Claudio Bravo is having a phenomenal season. However, another story that is emerging surrounds Real Madrid's forward Cristiano Ronaldo.
Cristiano Ronaldo is currently on pace to break the single season La Liga goal scoring record.
Lionel Messi presently holds the single season scoring record. During the 2011-12 season, Messi scored 50 goals in 38 games. That year Messi's squad, Barcelona, recorded the most goals in a La Liga season than ever before with 121. So far this year, Real Madrid has scored 48 goals in 13 games, 17 more than any other team. At this pace, Real Madrid will break Barcelona's team record by scoring 140 goals this season.
As for Ronaldo, he, too, is on pace to break a single-season goal record.
Ronaldo currently has 20 goals in 13 games. At the scoring rate he is going, Ronaldo will net an amazing 58 goals for the season, eight more than Messi did in 2011-12. For Ronaldo to break Messi's single-season scoring record, he will need 31 goals in the next 25 games. Of course, that is a lot of goals, but certainly not an impossibility for the 29-year-old Portuguese player.
It seems as if no matter where they play, what they do or how they finish, the two soccer rivals will always be compared. Messi and Ronaldo are widely recognized as the two best soccer players in the world.
Unfortunately for Ronaldo, he was held scoreless in his last game against Malaga CF. This was the first time Ronaldo failed to score a goal this La Liga season since Aug. 31, when Real Madrid lost to Real Sociedad, 4-2. Overall, Ronaldo has successfully scored at least one goal in 11 of 13 games this season.
Last La Liga season, Ronaldo scored 31 goals. His career high is 46 goals, which came during the 2011-12 season, but he was overshadowed that year by (you guessed it) Messi, who scored a record 50 goals. Watching Messi and Ronaldo chase the single-season scoring record that year was like watching the Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa home run chase in 1998.
Ronaldo and Real Madrid are currently ranked 1st overall this season with an 11-0-2 record, giving them 33 points. Their offense appears to be unstoppable with players such as Ronaldo, James Rodriguez, Karim Benzema and Toni Kroos. Real Madrid will face Celta Vigo in their next game on Saturday, Dec 6 at home.
Ronaldo's goal-scoring rate this season has been incredible and unmatchable by anyone so far. With 20 goals, Ronaldo leads Brazilian striker Neymar by nine goals for the league lead, and he is even tied for the most assists this season with Atletico Madrid's Koke.
Only time will tell if Ronaldo will break Messi's single season La Liga goal scoring record.
