La Liga Week 14 Standings: Cristiano Ronaldo and Real Madrid Still Lead Lionel Messi and Barcelona
Cristiano Ronaldo continues to make history.
The 29-year-old striker recorded a hat trick in his last La Liga game against Celta Vigo; a game in which Real Madrid won 3-0. Ronaldo now has a league-leading 23 goals this season, 10 more than second place Lionel Messi of Barcelona.
With 23 goals in 14 games, Ronaldo is on pace to break Messi's 2011-12 single season scoring record of 50 goals.
More importantly, Real Madrid is in first place with a 12-0-2 record, giving them 36 points. Real Madrid has by far the best offense this year, and they are on track to surpass the 2011-12 Barcelona squad scoring record of 121 goals in a season. Real Madrid has 51 goals thus far.
Of course Ronaldo is the man, but Real Madrid has other good scorers such as Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale. Unfortunately, Colombian striker James Rodriguez suffered a calf injury, and his return is still unknown. Ronaldo's eight assists are tied for the league lead with Koke of Atletico Madrid.
Goalkeeper Iker Casillas has done his job in net, allowing just 10 goals in his 12 starts. Casillas' great play will be needed down the stretch for this squad to hang on to the No. 1 spot.
Real Madrid will play Almeria in their next game on Dec. 12.
Right behind Real Madrid is FC Barcelona. While Ronaldo is making history this season, Messi is breaking all-time records. With 256 career goals, Messi is the all-time leading scorer in La Liga history. In his last game, against Espanyol, Messi recorded a hat trick leading Barcelona to a 5-1 victory.
Barcelona is 11-1-2 this season, giving them 34 points.
Although Barcelona has 15 less goals than their rivals, their defense has been exceptional this season. Barcelona has allowed the fewest goals this season, just seven. Chilean goalkeeper Claudio Bravo has allowed only seven goals in his 14 starts. No one is playing better between the pipes than Bravo is right now.
Of course the defense and goaltending has been elite, but Barcelona still has a powerful offensive unit. Barcelona ranks second in goals for this season with 36. Messi leads Barcelona in goals scored with 13, while Brazil's Neymar has 11 himself. Messi's seven assists rank second in the league.
Barcelona will play Getafe in their next game on Dec. 13.
Real Madrid and Barcelona have inserted themselves as the two best teams in the league this season. The El Clasico rivalry will be renewed on March 22 when Barcelona hosts Real Madrid at Camp Nou. Real Madrid won the first meeting 3-1.
Soccer fans still can't sleep on the defending champions. Atletico Madrid has won six of their last seven games, and is currently in third place with 32 points. Atletico Madrid has an extremely balanced offense with Mario Mandzukic leading the way with six goals. Goalkeeper Miguel Moya has allowed just 12 goals in his 14 starts.
