NBA Standings: Southwest Division Best In the National Basketball Association by a Mile This Season
Each and every NBA season, there's always one division in the league that stands above the rest. This season, the Southwest division is by far the best division of the six in the NBA.
Not a single team in the Southwest division has a losing record; the only division with that honor.
Possibly even more impressive, four of the five teams in the division have a winning record.
Currently, the Southwest Division is as follows:
1. Memphis Grizzlies: 17-4
2. Houston Rockets: 16-4
3. San Antonio Spurs: 15-6
4. Dallas Mavericks: 16-7
5. New Orleans Pelicans: 10-10
This division features the No. 1 offense, the No. 1 defense and the defending champions. You could also argue it has the best center in the game (Dwight Howard) and the best younger player in the NBA today, Anthony Davis. Plus, when it comes to star power and coaching, the Southwest Division doesn't disappoint.
The Grizzlies don't have the greatest offense, but with Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph leading the way, they have the best defense in the NBA. This team has made the postseason the last four consecutive seasons and will certainly be in the mix yet again this year. Even Vince Carter has done a good job, providing valuable minutes off the bench.
Offering a contrasting style of play are the Dallas Mavericks. Although the Mavericks rank 24th in team defense, they have the highest scoring offense in the league, averaging more than 110 points per game. Dirk Nowitzki and Monta Ellis lead the team in scoring while Chandler Parsons and Jameer Nelson are hitting critical perimeter shots.
The defending champions, the San Antonio Spurs, find themselves 15-6 after 21 games of play. Even though Tiago Splitter and Danny Green have been hurt, the Spurs have won eight of their last 10 games. The Spurs are the only team this season to defeat the Grizzlies in Memphis. As long as Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker and Gregg Popovich are on the team, the Spurs have a chance at a championship.
Staying in the state of Texas, the Houston Rockets have been great as expected. They have the best road record in the league at 8-1 and are currently rising a four-game winning streak. James Harden has been one of the best scorers this season, averaging 25.2 points per game, and Trevor Ariza has been a great addition to the team.
One can't help but feel sorry for the New Orleans Pelicans. Anthony Davis is the best young player in the game and has emerged as one of the best shot blockers in the league. Davis leads the Pelicans in blocks, points scored, rebounds, free throws and minutes played. If this Pelicans team played in the Eastern Conference, they would be a lock for the playoffs. The future looks great for the Pelicans.
The Southwest Division has a combined record of 74-31, by far the best mark in the NBA. The division with the second most victories is the Pacific, with 62 wins.
