NBA News: Dennis Rodman Blasts New York Knicks, Carmelo Anthony, Derek Fisher & Triangle Offense
At 4-20, the New York Knicks have the most losses in the NBA.
Yes, even more than the Philadelphia 76ers.
The Knicks have lost 10 consecutive games, rank 26th in scoring, have no team chemistry and everyone has an opinion on the state of the Knicks.
Hall of fame power forward Dennis Rodman gave his opinion on head coach Derek Fisher, Carmelo Anthony and the status of the Knicks.
"They're not running the triangle. Derek Fisher's not really coaching. I know Phil is trying to throw his input in the background, but who expected this from Phil? They expected him, we're going to give you $15 million a year for the next six years and this team is -- wow -- they might not even make the playoffs," said Rodman.
Rodman is certainly correct on the Knicks' playoff hopes. They currently rank fourth in the Atlantic Division behind the Boston Celtics, Brooklyn Nets and Toronto Raptors. The Knicks rank 13th overall in the Eastern Conference out of 16 teams.
Rodman went on to talk about Carmelo Anthony and the triangle offense.
"I learned that in probably 15 minutes when I was in Chicago. ... It's not that difficult. It's a triangle. ... How are you going to play with a superstar like Carmelo Anthony when he wants to shoot the ball all the time and everybody else has to play their role? ... Who is the man here in New York besides Carmelo? Nobody wants to play together with Carmelo, it seems like."
Harsh words, but maybe a harsh reality. Rodman is one of the greatest power forwards in NBA history having won five NBA Championships with the Chicago Bulls and Detroit Pistons. Rodman won seven consecutive rebounding titles, and is widely regarded as one of the best defensive players of all-time. Most importantly, Rodman played under Phil Jackson with the Bulls for three seasons, so he's heavily qualified to talk about the triangle offense.
As for Anthony, many fans are questioning whether or not he is the elite player who can lead the Knicks to the Promised Land. Lack of defense and a passing game seem to be holding him back. According to multiple reports, Anthony and teammate Tim Hardaway Jr. got into an altercation after Hardaway yelled "get the rebound."
Those same sources said Anthony was going to "beat him up" in the locker room. No physical violence took place, but teammates are at odds with Anthony shooting too much and the triangle offense isn't working at all.
Rodman went on to say, "If I know Phil, he just feels like crap right now. ... I think he just feels like, 'Wow, I thought I came here to do a great job and revitalize the city of New York.' He didn't expect this."
Jackson has won 11 championships as a head coach. He also won another two titles as a player, ironically for the Knicks. Jackson isn't used to losing, but it appears as if the 69-year-old team president has no interest in coaching. Long distance traveling, constant practices and having to put up with players just isn't on Jackson's radar right now.
With this season almost considered a "lost season" already, many NBA experts are predicting that the Knicks will trade point guard Jose Calderon before the NBA trade deadline. The Knicks need to save cap space and build for the future while they still can.
