Drive-By Shooting Takes Place Outside of Delaware Home of Vice President Joe Bide, Wife Dr. Jill Biden
Secret Service officials said a speeding vehicle drove by Vice President Joe Biden's residence in Delaware Saturday night and fired multiple gun shots, although no one was hurt.
According to reports, the apparent drive-by shooting occurred around 8:25 p.m. ET, while the vice president and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, were out to dinner, reports Reuters.
"A vehicle drove by the vice president's residence at a high rate of speed and fired multiple gun shots. This occurred on a public road outside the established security perimeter. The shots were heard by Secret Service personnel posted at the residence, and a vehicle was observed by an agent, leaving the scene at a high rate of speed," Secret Service spokesman Robert Hoback told CNN.
The vice president's residence, which is near Wilmington, is several hundred yards away from the public road from where the shots were fired. It was not clear whether the gunfire was random or aimed at the Biden home, which is not visible from the road,
Officials investigated the outside of Biden's residence and local residences for damage, but county police said no damage was found.
"Officers learned a short time later there was a report of shots fired in the nearby area of Hoopes Reservoir," the New Castle County Police Department said on Sunday in a statement.
About 30 minutes after the shooting, local police arrested an individual who attempted to drive pass an officer at a security checkpoint near the Biden home.
County Police Sgt. Jacob Andrews said the individual is not connected to the shooting incident, but he will be questioned by Secret Service regarding the shooting, The Associated Press reports.
"While the incident scene was being searched at approximately [9 p.m.], an individual in a vehicle attempted to pass a New Castle County police officer who was securing the outer perimeter of the area. As a result of the interaction with the officer, this individual was arrested for resisting arrest," Hoback said.
The Bidens and U.S. President Barack Obama were briefed on the incident on Saturday night.
