Lyft Executives Talks Car Service's New Look: 'Glowstache' to Hopefully Annoy Drivers Less
Lyft drivers used to be easily noticeable when they had a giant pink, furry mustache on the grilles of their cars. Now, new drivers are given a tiny replica or just a Lyft sticker, but coming soon will be a much smaller glowing mustache to be displayed in the driver's dashboard.
Lyft drivers will be mailed the banana-sized devices soon, Wired reports. They will be powered by pink lights.
"People were either like, 'I love it,' or 'I never want to get in a car like that,'" Lyft's new creative director, Jesse McMillin, said.
McMillin joined Lyft last summer from Virgin America. He was tasked with coming up with a fresh new way to display the Lyft mustache and brand. He even thought about getting rid of the mustache completely.
Coming out with the new "glowstache" means that drivers can attach the device much easier than the traditional mustache, which forced drivers to get out of their cars and attach the stash to their grilles. Some drivers got annoyed of taking down the mustache when not driving for Lyft and then putting it back on when on duty, and others stopped using it completely.
"A lot of times you'd see people driving around, and it was cockeyed, or matted, or windblown," McMillin said.
Now, the new glowstache will simply be attached to an adhesive pad that will then be attached to any dashboard easily and it will not blow around.
The image for Lyft should improve too.
Lyft President John Zimmer said the new glowstache is "more modern, more fresh, and also more acceptable for everyone."
Lyft operates solely via an online app. A rider requests a ride via the Lyft app. Once the driver arrives to pick them up, the rider gets a text message saying their ride is there and to look out for the car, indicating its color and make. The payment is also done directly through the app.
Without the big furry mustaches, passengers might not immediately recognize their rides, but the glowstache should help.
What do you think about this change by Lyft?
