Top Februrary 2015 Latino Movie Releases: 'McFarland, USA,' 'Buen Dia, Ramon' and 'Wild Tales' Among Anticipated Titles
A number of Latin American films featuring high-profile stars will be released in the month of February.
The first week of the month will see A24 expand the Oscar Isaac and Catalina Sandino Moreno starrer "A Most Violent Year" expand nationwide. The movie has been in release for over a month, and while it was snubbed for at the Academy Awards, the film has been a popular hit among Indie audiences.
Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's "Birdman" will also continue to play, especially after having nabbed nine Academy Award nominations to become the current front-runner for Best Picture.
The first week of February will also see the release of the 2013 film "Buen Dia, Ramon." The drama premiered at the Morelia Film Festival two years ago and was later released throughout Latin America. American audiences will finally get to see the movie, which is directed by Jorge Ramirez Suarez and tells the story of a young man's journey in Germany which leads him to unforgettable friendships.
The third week of February will see the Kevin Costner starrer "McFarland, USA." The movie tells the story of a cross country coach in a small California town who transforms a team of athletes into championship contenders. The movie is based on real life events and also stars Maria Bello, Carlos Pratts, Vanessa Martinez and Vincent Martella. Disney is releasing the film on Oscar weekend.
Also being released on the same weekend is the Academy Award nominee "Wild Tales." The film is nominated for the Best Foreign Film award and is currently the front-runner to win the category. Directed by Damian Szifron and produced by Pedro Almodovar, the film is divided into multiple stories about love deception, the return of the past, a tragedy, or even the violence contained in an everyday detail. The film stars renowned Argentine actors Liliana Ackerman, Ricardo Darin and Dario Grandinetti. Sony Pictures Classics is releasing the movie in limited release before expanding it nationwide.
The upcoming biopic "Gloria" will also be released on the same day. The new movie, not to be confused with 2014's "Chilean" film of the same name, tells the story of the controversial Mexican pop/rock icon Gloria Trevi. The movie stars Sofia Espinosa, Osvaldo Rios and Marco Perez. The movie was recently released in Mexico where it has become a popular hit. Picturehouse will release the movie and hopes that it will play well amongst Trevi fans.
On Feb. 27, Strand will release the Brazilian film "Futuro Beach." The film was a huge hit at the festival circuit, where it premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and later went on to score awards at the San Sebastian Film Festival and play at the Palm Springs and Chicago Film Festivals. The drama tells the story Donato who meets Konrad shortly after facing the failure of an attempt to rescue a drowning man.
Motivated by the circumstances, Donato decides to begin a new life in Berlin, but pieces of his past are coming after him. The movie is being released in limited theaters and it should definitely appeal to art house and foreign film enthusiasts.
Radius TWC will also release the new Salma Hayek film "Everly" on Feb. 27. The Indie feature is an action/thriller centered on a woman who faces down assassins sent by her ex, a mob boss, while holed up in her apartment. The film played at the Fantastic Festival where it scored positive reviews. The movie is directed by Joe Lynch and also stars Gabriella Wright and Jennifer Blanc. Radius will release the movie first on demand and then it will hit limited release.
