Australian Open 2015 Round 4 Results, Steam, TV Schedule & Draws: Brazil, Uruguay Aim For Tennis Doubles Grand Slam
The 2015 Australian Open is three rounds complete.
In the men's singles, No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic and No. 3 seed Rafael Nadal have been perfect thus far. Nadal defeated Mikhail Youzhny in the first round, Tim Smyczek in the second round, and dominated Dudi Sela in the third round in straight sets. Nadal will play Kevin Anderson in the fourth round. The 28-year-old Anderson out of South Africa is the No. 14 ranked player in the world.
As for the top ranked player, Djokovic, he too has punched his ticket to round four. Djokovic has successfully defeated Aljaž Bedene, Andrey Kuznetsov and Fernando Verdasco and will play Gilles Muller next.
The defending champion, Stan Wawrinka, will play Guillermo García-López in the fourth round.
One of the big surprises in the first three rounds of play has been the elimination of Roger Federer. Federer was ousted in the third round by Italian Andreas Seppi in a thrilling contest. Federer will now have to wait until the French Open until he can win 18th career grand slam championship.
With Europe dominating the singles tournament, numerous Latin Americans have been taking advantage of the doubles competition.
The Argentinian duo of Leonardo Mayer and Carlos Berlocq made it to the second round, where they had to face the greatest doubles team in tennis history, Bob and Mike Bryan. The Bryans brothers are the No. 1 ranked squad in the world, and they have won an incredible 16 grand slams together, the most in tennis history. Berlocq and Mayer won the first set but dropped the next two eventually in defeat.
The Colombian pair of Juan Sebastián Cabal and Robert Farah Maksoud had a disappointing third round losing to Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert.
The only two south American-born tennis players remaining at the Australian Open are Marcelo Melo and Pablo Cuevas. The two are both still competing at the doubles event on different teams. Cuevas of Uruguay is playing with David Marrero, while Brazil's Melo is playing alongside Ivan Dodig. The last time a South American tennis player won a doubles grand slam was the 2008 French Open, when Cuevas was victorious.
To date, no South American has ever won the Australian Open doubles, and the last time a South American conquered the singles competition was 1979, when Guillermo Vilas won it all.
The field began with 64 teams, and just 16 squads remain. The Round of 16 features the very best tennis teams from around the world, and both Melo and Cuevas will look to win this year's Australian Open.
Round four of the Australian Open begins on Saturday, Jan. 24, at 9 p.m. EST on ESPN2 at Melbourne Park, Australia. You can view a live tennis steam here.
