New York Yankees News & Rumors: Team Pursuing MLB Free Agents James Shield & Yoan Moncada
The New York Yankees have a lot of questions heading into this season.
The Bronx Bombers have missed the postseason the last two years, and they will be without future Hall of Famer Derek Jeter moving forward. Many fans even feel like the Yankees should just release Alex Rodriguez and move on.
The 2015 Major League Baseball season doesn't begin until April, but the Yankees are always busy.
According to reports, the Yankees have been "actively pursuing" starting pitcher James Shields. The Yankees stayed away from the Max Scherzer and Jon Lester sweepstakes, and rightfully so. Scherzer recently received a $210 million contract with the Washington Nationals, and the Yankees have to think much smaller than that given their financial payroll and status.
Shields has lasted much longer on the free agency market than most expected. Most likely, this is because he has not received the price tag he so badly desires from any team, and is still looking for the right squad to join. Shields is now 33 years old, and led the Kansas City Royals to a World Series appearance last season. It's a good sign for the Yankees that Shields is still available, but the Yankees have to be careful not to overpay for the veteran pitcher.
Shields is capable of pitching a lot of innings and he can carry a heavy workload. Obviously, he would provide relief to a Yankees rotation that ranked 18th in ERA last season, but a long-term contract could be very detrimental to the team given Shields' age.
Another player the Yankees have had their eyes on is Cuban infielder Yoan Moncada.
Recently, the Yankees had scouts in Guatemala taking a look at the 19-year-old Cuban baseball player. With the new MLB rules, Moncada has been cleared to sign as a free agent. The Yankees are no strangers to offseason international signings. Last year they made the biggest international signing when they brought in Japanese pitcher Masahiro Tanaka. Tanaka had a great rookie season.
Let's also not forget that Cuban first baseman José Abreu won the American League Rookie of the Year last season with the Chicago White Sox.
Moncada would be a terrific signing by the Yankees for a number of reasons.
Let's be honest, the Yankees aren't ready to win right now, and they are rebuilding. It's all about getting younger and more talented players for the Pinstripes. Moncada is still just 19 years of age, and he has shown a lot of promise in the various Cuban leagues that he has played in. He is often compared to Yasiel Puig, who also left Cuba to live out his dream in MLB. Moncada isn't considered a great power hitter and his fielding could improve, but he makes contact at the plate consistently and he is a very fast base runner.
Last season, the Yankees ranked 20th in runs scored, 20th in batting average and 23rd in hits.
Other teams who are reportedly pursuing Moncada include the Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers and Detroit Tigers. Moncada previously held workouts with the San Francisco Giants, San Diego Padres, Tampa Bay Rays, Milwaukee Brewers and Texas Rangers.
"My goal is to sign with a team soon, start training with them, and make it to the major leagues as fast as I can with whichever team that might be. I know I'm going to do the best I can for as long as I can in this sport" said Moncada.
