The New York Giants have failed to meet expectations since winning the 2012 Super Bowl.

Tom Coughlin and Big Blue have missed the postseason the last three consecutive NFL seasons, and five of the last six overall. For most teams that wouldn't fly, but two Super Bowl victories since 2007 shows everyone that these guys know how to get the job done in the postseason.

Obviously, there is much work to be done for a team that went 6-10 last season. Here are five things the Giants should consider doing this offseason:

1. Sign Terrance Knighton

While Ndamukong Suh is the big name defensive tackle on the open market, Terrance Knighton has quietly become the most underrated free agent player this offseason. There's no doubt Suh is a more versatile player who can get to the quarterback and do more things than Knighton can, but he will come at a very high price. Knighton is the single best run stopper in the NFL. Ask the Denver Broncos, who had the No. 2 ranked run defense in the league last season. As for the Giants, their run defense was putrid last season ranking 30th overall against the run.

2. Sign Da’Norris Searcy

The Buffalo Bills had a terrific defensive squad last season. They ranked third in pass defense, and allowed the fewest passing touchdowns against in the NFL. Part of the reason for all that is because of strong safety Da’Norris Searcy. The Giants secondary has a lot of upcoming free agents such as Antrel Rolle, Quintin Demps, Walter Thurmond and Stevie Brown. There's a good chance the Giants will re-sign Rolle, but they still need to make moves to improve their secondary.

3. Get a Veteran Running Back

The Giants are always one of the best teams at running a two-back system. Andre Williams had an average rookie season, and Rashad Jennings is also a good running back, but injuries and inconsistency still leave an unbalanced offense. The Giants have a lot of good options in free agency at the running back position. It's extremely unlikely they will make a run at DeMarco Murray, but getting a veteran back could be beneficial. Frank Gore is one of the most consistent backs in the league, and he would be a great free agent addition for the Giants. We may even see a reunion with the Giants and Ahmad Bradshaw.

4. Sign Justin Houston

Popular opinion around the NFL world is that the Giants should (and will) franchise tag Jason Pierre-Paul. That's not a bad move, but it leaves a lot of uncertainty after next season. The best linebacker in the NFL is a free agent this offseason, Justin Houston. Houston is a sack monster, having accumulated 43 sacks over the last three seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs. Houston is just 26 years old, and his future is very bright. Financially speaking, the Giants are doing well with nearly $15 million worth of salary cap space.

5. Improve The Offensive Line

There's no doubt about it, the Giants don't have a very good offensive line. Last season quarterback Eli Manning was sacked 28 times. That's not terrible, but that number is slightly flawed because of Manning's mobility and having to throw the ball out of bounds so many times. The Giants recently agreed to terms with 23-year-old center Brett Jones, who is widely regarded as the best offensive lineman in the Canadian Football League. Notable free agent offensive lineman include Doug Free, Michael Roos, Mike Iupati and Orlando Franklin.
