This NFL offseason promises to be a big one. So many great players are scheduled to become free agents, especially wide receivers. Demaryius Thomas and Dez Bryant are by far the two most notable wide receivers who have expiring contracts this offseason, but they will come at an enormously high price.

According to multiple reports, Jeremy Maclin has considered joining the Kansas City Chiefs this offseason.

"I’ve always said I wanted to be an Eagle. They’ve expressed the same, so hopefully something gets worked out. I also understand that this is a business and I also understand that anything can happen."

The Chiefs desperately need wide receiver help. Despite having a winning record in each of the last two seasons with head coach Andy Reid, the Chiefs have passing issues that can't be ignored. Last season the Chiefs ranked 29th in total passing yards, and Alex Smith isn't getting any younger. Incredibly, the Chiefs failed to throw even one single touchdown to a wide receiver last season for the first time in 50 years.

Maclin would be a great addition to an offense that lacks a big passing threat. Dwayne Bowe is the Chiefs best wide receiver, but he continues to fail to reach expectations with his inconsistent play. The most reliable catcher for the Chiefs last season was tight end Travis Kelce. Maclin had a tremendous season last year with a career high 85 receptions, 1,318 yards and 10 touchdowns. Maclin is still just 26 years old, and he has a bright future ahead of him.

Without a dependable deep threat, opposing teams can simply stack the box at the line of scrimmage and contain running back Jamaal Charles.

The Eagles will definitely try and re-sign Maclin, but they have bigger issues to deal with first. The Eagles terrible defense halted them from winning the NFC East last season ranking 28th overall and 31st against the pass. The Eagles need secondary help, and they will have their eyes on corners and safeties to help improve their playoff chances.

If Maclin were to sign with Chiefs, it would be a very interesting combination. Andy Reid used to coach Maclin back in the City of Brotherly Love, and Maclin is used to playing on an offense that is run first. The Eagles do hold one very big advantage in this receiver sweepstakes: salary cap space. The Eagles currently have $19 million in salary cap space, whereas the Chiefs are $1.6 million over the cap. That's a $20 million difference. Wide receiver is an issue for the Chiefs, but general manager John Dorsey has to make a big decision on his superstar linebacker, Justin Houston, first.

Letting Houston walk may seem crazy because he is one of the best pass rushers in the game having led the NFL in sacks last season. On the other hand, the Chiefs have to look at team needs. Would spending money on Maclin and letting Houston walk be a wise decision? You could argue that because the Chiefs still have great defenders such as Tamba Hali, Dontari Poe, Kurt Coleman and Ron Parker.

The NFL free agent and trading period begins on March 10 at 4 p.m. EST.
