NFL Free Agents 2015: Top 5 Most Underrated Players Entering Free Agency & Teams They Could Sign With
Some of the very best players will be available this offseason to sign around the league.
Notable players such as Dez Bryant, Demaryius Thomas, Justin Houston and possibly even Darrelle Revis, if the New England Patriots do not exercise their team option on him, will be up for grabs
But, we can't overlook the X-factor players -- the players who don't get huge attention, but still make a big difference on the field. These players make a critical impact on the field and they will come at a much cheaper price.
Here are the five most underrated players entering free agency:
1. Nate Washington
Nate Washington really is an underrated wide receiver. He's never made a Pro Bowl, but he has eclipsed the 600-yard mark seven times in his career and won two Super Bowls. To put up the type of numbers he did with the Tennessee Titans over the last six years without a reliable quarterback is pretty impressive. Washington is still 31 years old, and he is a physical receiver. On top of that, Washington hasn't missed a game since 2005, which was his rookie season. With Randall Cobb possibly leaving the Green Bay Packers, Washington would fit in great with Aaron Rodgers in the NFC North.
2. Julius Thomas
Julius Thomas gets overshadowed by star wide receiver and teammate Demaryius Thomas, who will most likely get the franchise tag. The Broncos may have to let Julius Thomas walk as a free agent in order to afford keeping other key players. Julius Thomas is one of the best tight ends in the NFL, having found the end zone more than other tight end in the game. Thomas has recorded 12 receiving touchdowns in each of the last two seasons, and he is still just 26 years old. He's not a great blocker, but Thomas has great hands and good speed. The Oakland Raiders have a lot of salary cap space, and they need a tight end.
3. Dwayne Harris
Dallas Cowboys special teams player Dwayne Harris could be a very valuable player for a team this offseason. Harris has been a very good punt returner for the Cowboys and has returned 58 kickoffs the last two seasons. Harris is also capable of playing receiver as he does have 33 catches and three receiving touchdowns in the last three seasons. Harris isn't an elite receiver or return man, but a team that wants him can save a roster spot by signing him because he's so versatile and can play multiple positions. Bill Belichick could work wonders with Harris, and it would save Julian Edelman hits on punt and kick returns.
4. Jeremy Maclin
Jeremy Maclin is one of the most underrated wide receivers in the NFL today. After missing the entire 2013 season because of a torn ACL, Maclin had a great 2014 campaign. Last year, Maclin had career highs across the board with 85 catches, 1,318 yards and 10 touchdowns. The Philadelphia Eagles will try to re-sign their star wide out, but they have to focus primarily on their 28th rank defense first and foremost. Without DeSean Jackson on the team last year, Maclin proved he can be a No. 1 receiver for a team in need of a wide out. The Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars are expected to make a move to add a star wide receiver this offseason.
5. Stephen Gostkowski
Yes, kickers matter too.
You could definitely make the case that Stephen Gostkowski is the best kicker in the NFL today. Gostkowski has led the NFL in fields twice and has made 73 of 78 field goals over the last two years. Gostkowski is also a great long-distance kicker, having made 13 of his 17 attempts from 50 yards or longer in his career. The New England Patriots will first focus on re-signing players like Darrelle Revis, Devin McCourty and Shane Vereen, but they have to lockup their All-Pro kicker as well. Gostkowski is the all-time leading scorer in Patriots history. The Detroit Lions would certainly be a good fit.
The NFL free agent and trading period begins on March 10 at 4 p.m. EST.
