NFL Free Agents Rumors: New York Giants, Miami Dolphins, New York Jets Expected to Make a Run at Ndamukong Suh
With the National Football League franchise tag deadline expired, it's almost time for free agency.
On Tuesday, March 10 at 4 p.m. EST the free agent and trade period will officially begin. Any player who has not been franchise-tagged or has an expiring contract will become a free agent at that time.
One of the biggest names who is set to become a free agent is Ndamukong Suh.
Suh has been one of the best defensive tackles in the NFL since being drafted in 2010 by the Detroit Lions. Suh has accumulated 36 sacks (8.5 last season) and he's a very young player. Sometimes he draws penalties from late hits, but Suh is still expected to be one of the most sought after free agent players this offseason.
The New York Giants are one of the teams that are expected to make a run at Suh. Throughout their franchise history, the Giants have bred pass rushers unlike any other franchise winning Super Bowls with Lawrence Taylor, Justin Tuck, Jason Pierre-Paul and Osi Umenyiora. Suh would be a perfect fit with Big Blue. Suh has also said numerous times that he desires to play in a big market like New York.
This will be tough for the Giants. They have about $9 million in salary cap space, and they know they must fix holes in the secondary and offensive line. The Giants may even invest in a running back this offseason. It will be extremely difficult to outbid the Oakland Raiders, Cleveland Browns and Jacksonville Jaguars, who have enormous cap space to unload this offseason. It looks as if the only way Suh can become a Giant is if he is willing to take a pay-cut.
The Giants are one of the most successful franchises in NFL history. As the only franchise to win a Super Bowl in four consecutive decades, Suh may consider taking less money if it means hoisting a Lombardi Trophy.
Is winning or money more important to the All-Pro defensive tackle? That's a decision Suh has to make.
Another team that has been involved with Suh is the Miami Dolphins. Just like the Giants, the Dolphins have a little over $9 million in cap space.
According to multiple reports, the Dolphins have a great shot to land Suh this offseason. One of the biggest reasons the Dolphins are so interested in Suh is because of their poor rush defense. Last season, the Dolphins run defense ranked 24th overall.
Could Suh choose the Dolphins because there's no personal income tax in Florida? Maybe. There's a chance the Dolphins could make this work with a "team friendly contract" somewhere in the realm of six years, $100 million.
We also can't count out the New York Jets. The Jets may be a more favorable option for Suh because he would get to play in a huge market and they have a lot more salary cap space than the Giants do. It's unlikely the Jets will be winning a Super Bowl anytime soon, but the money and notoriety is certainly there.
