Should Philadelphia Eagles Sign NFL Free Agent Quarterback Tim Tebow?
The Philadelphia Eagles stunned fans when they traded away their star running back LeSean McCoy for a player who didn't play last season and zero draft picks in return from the Buffalo Bills.
Fans got an even bigger jaw-dropper when the team traded away starting quarterback Nick Foles and a second-round pick for Sam Bradford, who also didn't even play a single game last season.
Chip Kelly has made the message loud and clear: this is his team and he's going to do things his way.
With Foles now in St. Louis and Bradford coming off (another) a torn ACL injury, Tim Tebow could be a great option to consider for the Eagles.
The most obvious reason is because of the type of offense head coach Chip Kelly prefers to run. His fast paced spread option offense has been moderately effective dating back to Oregon when he coached the Ducks. It hasn't been nearly as successful in the National Football League because of the tough competition, but it has shown signs of success.
As for Tebow, he has thrived in the spread offense. With the Florida Gators, he was the best quarterback in college throwing (yes, he can throw) for 88 touchdowns and just 16 interceptions. During his four seasons at Florida, Tebow ran for an incredible 57 touchdowns despite playing in the toughest division, the South Eastern Conference. Tebow won the Heisman trophy in 2007.
With the Denver Broncos, Tebow also showed he can thrive in the spread offense. In 2011, Tebow took over a 1-4 Broncos squad that looked all but finished. Tebow then went on to lead the Broncos to a 7-4 record in his 11 starts that regular season with 18 touchdowns and just six interceptions. And then of course we all remember what he was able to do in the postseason. Tebow led an upset victory over the No. 1 ranked Pittsburgh Steelers defense with 316 passing yards and three touchdowns.
With DeMarco Murray now on the roster, Tebow could be a good fit with the Eagles.
The cold hard truth is, most likely Bradford will get injured again. It's just playing the odds. Foles actually did a lot of good things in Philadelphia, including an incredible 27 touchdown and two interception season in 2013, but he's no longer there. The Eagles need a backup plan. Mark Sanchez is a decent backup quarterback, but he's never led a team to a division championship before in his career for a reason.
Singing Tebow would be of little to no risk whatsoever. Just look at the New England Patriots in the summer of 2013. They signed Tebow to a two year contract with no guaranteed money in the offseason. They decided to release him just before the season started because he didn't quite fit their system as they were able to find out in practice. No harm done. No foul. The Eagles could do the same with Tebow. Maybe Kelly will like his athletic mobile playing style. If not, the Eagles can simply cut him before the season starts in September.
With an injury prone Bradford and Sanchez leading the way at quarterback, what do the Eagles have to lose?
