La Liga Week 30 Standings & Table: Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo Both Score, Real Madrid and Barcelona Fighting for First Place
It was business as usual for Spain's top two soccer clubs.
Both Barcelona and Real Madrid took care of business defeating their opponents in Week 30 to remain in the top two spots in the La Liga standings.
Barcelona beat Almeria for the second time this season, the first coming in Week 11. Barcelona was victorious 4-0, thanks to goals from Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Marc Barta. There's no denying it, Suarez has been on a scoring streak lately. The 28-year-old Uruguayan has scored in his last three consecutive La Liga games.
Messi is still the man for Barcelona, and Neymar gets a lot of credit, but Suarez now has the second most assists on the team. Barcelona will play Sevilla this upcoming weekend on the road, and they have a huge game next week against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarterfinals.
Barcelona is now 24-2-4 with 74 points.
Real Madrid also won their game. They defeated Rayo Vallecano to stay just four points back of Barcelona for first place in the La Liga standings. Just like Barcelona, Real Madrid's superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo, found the net as well. Ronaldo scored his league-leading 37th goal of the season as Real Madrid was victorious, 2-0.
Real Madrid will face Eibar this upcoming weekend. Luckily for Real Madrid fans, their squad defeated Eibar in Week 12, 4-0, with Ronaldo scoring two goals. With that victory Real Madrid is now 23-1-6 with 70 points. Unfortunately, they don't control their own destiny, meaning, even if they were to win out completely, there's a chance they won't finish in first place. Real Madrid will have to get lucky and have Barcelona lose a game or two down the stretch to overtake their rivals.
Ronaldo now has 300 career goals for Real Madrid, 214 of which are La Liga.
One could argue the biggest winners of this week was Atletico Madrid. The defending champions defeated Real Sociedad, 2-0. Just when you thought Atletico Madrid was done, and this was a two team race, Diego Simone and his squad have been on a surge lately.
Atletico Madrid has just one loss in their last 12 games. To make things even better, Atletico Madrid swept Real Madrid in the famous "Madrid Derby" this season, thus holding the tie breaker. Just like Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid will have to get some luck. They will need Barcelona to lose a few games down the stretch in order to have a chance to finish in first place.
Valencia, who has just one loss in their last 16 games, still has to play Athletic Bilbao. Even if in all likelihood Valencia does win, they will not move up the standings anyway. Valencia will also be facing Levante over the weekend.
