The NBA and NHL playoffs are currently underway, and the NFL postseason ended in February with the New England Patriots defeating the Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl.

Two of the most famous players currently playing in the NBA and NHL playoffs are Alexander Ovechkin and Chris Paul III. Keeping that theme going, Tony Romo is the quarterback of the ever-so popular Dallas Cowboys football team.

Unfortunately, all three of them share a similar connection.

Romo, Ovechkin and Paul have never made it out of the second round of the playoffs.

Romo has led the Cowboys to the playoffs four times since 2006, including last season. He has two playoff victories, which came against the Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles. Three times Romo had a chance to advance to the third round with the Cowboys but lost all three games. Those three games came against the Green Bay Packers, New York Giants, and the Minnesota Vikings.

Romo played great against the Packers last postseason, but a controversial pass play to Dez Bryant was ruled incomplete. Regardless of whether or not Bryant caught the ball, the Packers prevailed at home, 26-21. By far the most disappointing defeat came in the 2007 season when the Cowboys finished with the No. 1 seed and had home-field advantage in the postseason thanks to a 13-3 record.

Despite all that, and the fact that the Cowboys had swept the Giants in the regular season, the Giants were victorious, 21-17. The game was clinched when Romo threw a late interception. After defeating the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2010 playoffs, Romo had his second chance at reaching the third round. But, the Vikings had different plans. Brett Favre and the Vikings annihilated the Cowboys, 34-3.

Paul and the Los Angeles Clippers are presently battling the San Antonio Spurs in the first round of the NBA playoffs. A tough series, but Paul has to win this series and probably the next one to validate his superstar status.

Paul led the New Orleans Hornets to the postseason three times, losing in the first round twice and second round once. His second round exit came in 2008 to the Spurs. Over the last four seasons Paul has been a member of the Clippers, and has made the playoffs all four seasons. Twice he has made it out of the first round with his new team, but lost both second round series to the Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder.

In the NHL playoffs, the Washington Capitals are taking on the New York Islanders. The Islanders lead the series two games to one, and Alexander Ovechkin could be looking at another first round exit. Ovechkin has led the NHL in goals the last three consecutive seasons, but he has never made it to the third round of the playoffs.

Three times the Ovechkin-led Capitals made it to the second round of the playoffs, but lost each series to the New York Rangers, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Tampa Bay Lightning. Ovechkin is approaching the 500-goal mark, but if he can never make it to the third round of the NHL playoffs, his legacy will take a big hit. Marcel Dionne finished his career with 750 career goals, but also never reached the third round of the playoffs.

Overall, Romo, Ovechkin and Paul are 0-9 in the third round of the playoffs.
